The editorial team at Tyres & Accessories/Tyrepress.com were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Jim Smith, editor of US tyre industry publication Tire Review. Smith, aged 58, died suddenly at the ‘Tire Industry Association OTR Conference’ in San Diego last week.

Thyssenkrupp is to build a new automotive components plant in Hungary. The company will invest around 100 million euros in a new production site for engine components and steering systems. Construction of the plant in Jászfényszaru, 70 kilometres east of Budapest, will start in spring 2016, with production of electronic power-assisted steering systems and cylinder head covers with integrated camshafts planned to commence in 2018. Thyssenkrupp reports that it will create around 500 new jobs at the site in the coming years. The expansion has reportedly been prompted by “major orders from international OEMs”.

Yokohama winning more 4×4 OE tyre business
Lately Yokohama has been increasing its presence in the 4x4/SUV OE tyre segment, with more tyres selected by manufacturers for initial fitment. According to the company, there are 24 new additions to the Advan Sport V105 size line-up, such as 235/50R19, 275/45R21 and 275/40R22. Indeed, this large SUV-orientated tyre has been chosen as original equipment by Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

GfK: UK still amongst largest and fastest growing SUV tyre markets
The UK is still one of the largest and fastest growing 4x4/SUV tyre markets in Europe. In fact, according to the latest data compiled by market research specialists GfK Automotive, the UK is the second largest in Europe with sales of 1.157 million 4x4 tyres in 2015. Speaking with GfK Automotive account director Kevin Glynn, Tyres & Accessories learnt that only Italy’s annual sales of 1.4 million 4x4 tyres last year was bigger.

Indian tyre maker Ceat Ltd reports it has given its wholly-owned Ceat Specialty Tyres Ltd (CTSL) subsidiary land in Ambarnath, near the city of Mumbai, for the purpose of erecting a new greenfield radial OTR tyre factory on the site, and has further aided the project through an Rs 250 million (£2.6 million) equity investment in CTSL in the October to December 2015 quarter. Altogether, CTSL will invest Rs 3.3 billion (£33.8 million) to build a plant with an initial daily capacity of 40 tonnes.

BKT has announced that it is investing in attending the triennial Bauma OTR equipment show in Munich from 11-17 April 2016. BKT reports it will welcome visitors by means of a “strong and appealing advertising presence conveying BKT’s vision”. As in the last edition of Bauma in 2013, BKT will exclusively customize all rickshaws that are at the trade show visitors’ disposal for moving around in the large open-air exhibition area. And it will be difficult to miss BKT’s new giant tyre, Earthmax SR 45 Plus, with its height of 2.70 metres.

The FAA-14 CFR Part 145 approval means operators of US-registered commercial aircraft are able to fit the company’s products. The company has a global tyre distribution and retreading network, and is opening its first distribution and retreading facility in North America in order to support aircraft operators throughout the Americas.
