Just over two years ago, Sumitomo Rubber Industries acquired Apollo Tyres South Africa, and with it the operation’s car tyre factory in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal. While the plant supplies the local market with passenger car and light truck tyres, Sumitomo Rubber South Africa has to-date met local demand for truck and bus tyres with imported products. This will soon change; the company has announced it will invest 910 million rand (£41.3 million) to install new production equipment within the Ladysmith facility, and it aims to produce truck and bus tyres there from July 2018.

The agreement runs until the end of 2017 and will be used to promote the Falken tyre brand, which becomes the “Official Tyre of the Qantas Wallabies.”

Apollo appoints ex-Goodyear OE specialist as senior vice president for North America
Apollo Tyres has appointed Steven Smidlein as the senior vice president for North America. This new role will be based in the firm’s New Jersey office and will see Smidlein reporting to Neeraj Kanwar, vice chairman and managing director, Apollo Tyres Ltd. An OE specialist, with previous experience at Goodyear, Steven Smidlein has spent most of his career working in various executive roles for car makers such as Chrysler, Honda and Accura in the US. According to the Apollo, Smidlein’s latest role sees him take responsibility for ”building the brand and sales in North America for both, Apollo and Vredestein”.

SD-International (SDI) has announced plans to showcase its Pace, Toledo and Zeta private label ranges – which cover the car radial and truck and bus sectors – at this year’s Reifen show in Essen. At the same SDI will be showcasing new AT and MT 4x4 tyre ranges, which will be available in both the Pace and Zeta variants, while the firm’s multilingual sales team will be revealing advance details of its new Zeta car tyre and SUV tyre ranges. Company representatives report that these have been specially produced for the American and ASEAN markets. Manufacturing of the new lines is set to commence in June of this year.

A step ahead or throwing in the towel? ‘Reifen’ show to abandon Essen
In a move that Messe Essen has described as “trailblazing”, yet may be interpreted by some as a back down in the face of new competitor trade show The Tire Cologne, from 2018 onward the Reifen exhibition will no longer be held in its traditional mid-year time slot or in the German city of Essen. Instead of going head-to-head with The Tire Cologne in the week of 29 May to 1 June 2018, Reifen has been rescheduled to take place alongside Automechanika in Frankfurt from 11 to 15 September.

Yokohama Rubber presented three premieres at this year’s Geneva Motor Show – with products ranging from the Advan Fleva V701 UHP tyre to the Geolander A/T G015 SUV tyre and the Advan A052 road-legal track day tyre in between. The new Advan Fleva V701 UHP is described as a “high-performance sport tyre” and represents the latest addition to Yokohama’s flagship Advan range. The new tyre will be available from July 2016 in 24 sizes. 43 sizes ranging from 195/55R15 85V to 255/30R20 92W will be available in early 2017.

Goodyear, together with the Luxembourg government and IEE, have announced plans to develop a new Automotive Campus dedicated to innovation. The Luxembourg Automotive Campus research and development area is intended to provide state of the art facilities to companies involved in technological innovation for the automotive sector. The tyre manufacturer also announced that part of its partnership with the Automotive Campus project means moving all its local non-manufacturing personnel onto the new site.
