On your bike – Transaid launches 2017 cycling challenge
International development organisation Transaid is calling on transport and logistics industry professionals to get on their bikes to raise funds for its life-saving work in Sub-Saharan countries, with the launch of its fifth European cycle challenge – taking place from September 22-25, 2017. The event will revisit the destination of Transaid’s first ever European cycling event from 2012, with up to 50 riders to complete the 240-mile adventure over three days in the saddle, cycling from London to the French capital.

The East European market will grow by over 6 per cent in 2016 and by almost 5 per cent in 2017, according to a Clear International analysis. But there have been considerable changes. The figure for 2016 is considerably lower than was anticipated at the beginning of the year and the difference is mostly attributable to developments in Turkey. Political instability had already undermined business confidence in early 2016 and then in mid-year there was an attempted military coup. This has had a dire and worsening effect on business investment resulting in 10,000 trailers being wiped from the forecast.

Spanish haulier Marcotran says Goodyear Fuelmax and Kmax truck tyre have made demonstrable savings on its fleet. Comparative tests run by the company show that on certain routes it can save almost 1,000 euros per vehicle per year by using Fuelmax tyres, and the high mileage offered by Kmax tyres makes them more economical on other routes. Marcotran is a Spanish based international freight company. Its pan-European fleet comprises about 700 trucks and 1,200 trailers, with routes varying from mundane regional runs to the longest between Spain to Moscow.

A new range of anti-puncture motorcycle tyres from Ceat Ltd. has been introduced in India. The Hindu Business Line states that the manufacturer is rolling out these products in the south of India and will gradually introduce the range into other parts of the country. Ceat is initially targeting the aftermarket as, so reports Nitish Bajaj, the company’s vice-president of marketing, OEMs are “price sensitive and take time to decide on anything new.”

Bridgestone recently announced its intention to increase capacity for radial aircraft tyre production at its Kurume plant in Japan. The company has now amended the statement it released on 17 October, changing the investment amount; rather than investing US$2.1 billion in the project as previously reported, Bridgestone states that the actual investment figure is 2.1 billion yen (£16.5 million).

The tyre maker’s new central research and development centre is located in Daejeon, South Korea, not far from its existing (and still operational) R&D centre, and is described by the company as “an embodiment of Hankook Tire’s strong commitment in R&D innovation” and a “core instrument” of Hankook’s global R&D infrastructure.

ChemChina is said to have expressed interest in Kumho Tire Co., according to Korean news source. Citing “industry sources” Pulse News said ChemChina “signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with creditors of Kumho Tire last month and began preparing for an official bid. The Chinese company selected Boston Consulting Group to advice on the deal.”
