Yokohama hails Chelsea success as team wins ‘football’s biggest prize’
Chelsea’s 1-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion completed the club’s Premier League championship with two games to spare in shirt sponsor Yokohama’s second season with the club. The Japanese tyre manufacturer has enjoyed the benefits of its association with the winners of what it calls the biggest and most prestigious prizes in world club football, with a “big increase” in “brand recognition,” according to David Seward, managing director, Yokohama HPT Ltd. Yokohama’s sponsorship also helped generate some publicity for road safety charity TyreSafe this year, as Chelsea became a member, and displayed the organisation’s messages at Stamford Bridge.

An explosion this morning at a factory owned by Continental shareholder Schaeffler is said to have injured 13 people. According to a report from the Police in Lower Franconia, Germany, an explosion occurred within a production hall at Schaeffler’s roller bearing factory in the town of Eltmann. It is currently thought that the explosion and a small fire that followed are linked to a problem with a cleaning system for industrial salt.

eBay begins rollout of tyre fitting service
Beginning this month, eBay will begin adding tyre fitting to the portfolio of automotive services it offers in certain markets. The online giant says eBay Motors will initially offer tyre fitting to motorists in Germany before rolling out the service in the US market this summer. eBay has yet to provide a timetable for the service’s introduction into the UK or other markets.

Thai government, Deestone partner to produce high-rubber content tyres
The Rubber Authority of Thailand, together with the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, has unveiled its own tyre brand – TH-Tyre. The two bodies hope that sales of TH-Tyre products will stimulate the use of natural rubber grown and tapped in Thailand. The tyres, which debuted on in the Thai market last month, are manufactured by local manufacturer Deestone Co.,Ltd.

Malaysian news site Utusan Online reports the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Chinese tyre maker Shandong Wanda Boto Tyre Co. Ltd. and government agency the Malacca State Development Corporation (PKNM). The MoU, signed on 11 April, will see Wanda Boto invest Rm 1.2 billion (£213.5 million) to set up a tyre factory in Lipat Kajang, near the town of Jasin, some 100 miles southeast of Kuala Lumpur. The plant is expected to be operational by mid-2018.

Unexploded WW2 bombs prompt evacuation of Continental tyre plant
A Continental tyre factory in Hannover, Germany was evacuated yesterday as part of a planned action to defuse and remove a number unexploded bombs dating from the Second World War. The plant, adjacent to the company’s current headquarters, was closed along with hospitals and nursing homes in the area. Some 50,000 local residents were required to leave their homes.
