Sumitomo introduces ‘Sensing Core’ tyre technology
Sumitomo Rubber reports that the company has developed a new tyre-sensing technology called Sensing Core. Sensing Core is designed to detect road conditions, tyre load and other information by analyzing the wheel speed signals that are generated by the rotation of the tyres. Sumitomo says the technology will play a role in the advancement of autonomous vehicle technology.

When Goodyear Tire & Rubber first announced an intention to close its tyre factory in Philippsburg, Germany, it said it would do so by the end of 2017. The company now reports that the tyre manufacture will end at the site mid-year. In a press statement, Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany says that, together with employee representatives, agreed to wind production up by 31 July.

Bridgestone’s Russia tyre plant to officially open next week
An official opening ceremony for Bridgestone’s new passenger car tyre factory in Russia will be held next Thursday, states the tyre maker. Although commercial production at the Bridgestone Tire Manufacturing C.I.S. LLC facility began last December, on 25 May more than 200 invited guests, including key Bridgestone partners, suppliers and representatives from local, regional, national and also Japanese government authorities, will attend a ceremony at the 81-hectare plant site in the Zavolzhye Industrial Zone, some 560 miles southeast of Moscow.

Most major markets saw a decrease: the UK’s market dropped by 19.8 per cent, followed by Germany (-8.0 per cent), France (-6.0 per cent), and Italy (-4.6 per cent). Among the largest markets only Spain grew by 1.1 per cent.

And upon entering into a multiyear sponsorship agreement with the Cavaliers, the Ohio-based tyre maker spoke of “home-state pride.” The deal, announced yesterday at the Cavaliers’ home arena, will see the Goodyear Wingfoot logo appear on player uniforms from the 2017-18 season.
