Nokian Tyres charged 59 million euros extra tax in Finland
Nokian Tyres plc has received a tax reassessment decision from Finland’s Tax Administration, according to which the Company is obliged to pay 59 million euros additional taxes with punitive tax increases relating to the 2011 tax year. Payment must be made in November 2017. 39 million euros of the figure relates to additional taxes and 20 million euros relates to punitive tax increases and interests.

Taiwan-based tyre manufacturer Kenda has purchased Starco Europe. Announced on 2 October, the move is described by Kenda as “a good cultural, organizational and strategic fit” for which both companies see “significant long-term opportunities”. Kenda has been a Starco supplier since 1982. Over the last 12 months a series of meetings determined a clear willingness from both Kenda and Starco to take the partnership to another level. Starco does not plan any organizational changes or redundancies related to the acquisition.

Dunlop is preparing for the final three World Endurance Championship events of 2017, with 6 Hour races in Fuji, Shanghai, and Bahrain. In LMP2, the teams will have the medium and medium-plus options for the remaining three rounds. Although the class is open in terms of tyre competition, all teams have chosen to compete on Dunlop tyres. Tyre choice in the GTE class will vary across the three available compounds depending on manufacturer and track. This is the first year with the GTE Pro class tyre restrictions in place which necessitates double stinting, and combined with the extreme conditions of the final three tracks, will make set-ups particularly critical.

Bonn District Court and the higher Federal court of appeal in Cologne have rejected the application for a preliminary injunction against Ultra-Seal regarding the use of Ultra-Seal on the German market sought by the German tyre association BundesReifenVerband (BRV). According to the company, over the last few months, a large lobby had been set up by the BRV, which had been “proactively attacking Ultra-Seal users and the press with statements about Ultra-Seal being illegal on the German market on grounds of §36 of the StVZO (German Road Vehicle Registration Regulations) under ‘Richtlinien’ (guidelines) issued by the Bundesverkehrsministerium (Federal Transport Department)”. Ultra-Seal stated its counterarguments against these allegations in statement published by Tyres & Accessories’ German sister website, Reifenpresse on 23 May 2017.

Michelin has taken first place in Tyres & Accessories annual online brand prominence table, conducted in association with analysts NetNames. Following the news that Michelin is the strong online brand in terms of social media equity both in the UK and globally, the French tyre maker is no doubt delight to continue its historically strong showing. However, for the second year in a row, Continental overtook Michelin in terms of brand sentiment. And when you consider that Continental is also Michelin’s main contender in terms of social media equity, it now appears that pole position in the online space is a two horse race between Michelin and Continental. That’s said, at the other end of the spectrum mid-range and economy brands have registered some significant increases in online brand prominence during the last 12 months.
