China launch for Prinx TBR range
In the UK, Prinx Chengshan is primarily represented in the truck tyre segment by the Fortune brand, with the company also marketing these products across other parts of Europe under the Austone name. While the flagship Prinx brand is exclusively associated with consumer tyres in our region, the manufacturer has now introduced a range of Prinx truck tyres in its domestic market. On 21 August, Prinx Chengshan held a major product launch event in Rongcheng, Shandong, where it unveiled the first high-end Prinx truck tyres for the Chinese market.

Nexen Tire has “restructured” the prices of its summer and all-weather tyres effective 1 September 2024. The move, which amounts to a price increase, will be implemented across the European market, including the United Kingdom and Turkey. It will apply to all goods ordered from that date onward.

Tyre makers in China exported 60.6 million tyres in July 2024, exceeding the 60-million mark for the second consecutive month. Volumes were up 6.8 per cent year-on-year in July, with the value of these tyre exports amounting to 14.05 billion yuan (£1.49 billion).

Some 1.6 million passenger cars were sold in China in July 2024, and for the first time the number of new energy vehicles sold surpassed sales of combustion vehicles. The top ten selling cars accounted for around 230,000 units, and local association the Car and Wheel Shop Owners Alliance provides information about the tyres these popular models wear as original equipment. Linglong is a reoccurring name, with six of the ten best-selling models available with Linglong OE tyres.

Following a challenging 2023, the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA) has reported positive developments in the first half of 2024. ETRMA members recorded a year-on-year increase in replacement consumer PCLT (passenger car, light truck) and agricultural tyre sales in H1 2024, with particularly strong performance in the second quarter. However, PCLT tyre imports grew at a faster rate than member sales.

Group revenue was up 3.7 per cent to $121 million (FY23: $117 million) through “diversified product offering and increased cross sell”. And Gross profit was up 12.0 per cent to $41.4 million “benefits from optimisation program and scale”.

China has extended anti-dumping duties on imports of halogenated butyl rubber originating in the United Kingdom, European Union, United States, and Singapore, extending a programme of penalties first announced six years ago. Upon the recommendation of the Peoples Republic of China’s Ministry of Commerce, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council is imposing anti-dumping duties for a further five years, effective from 20 August 2024.
