Plant closure – Bandag to consolidate European retreading
Retreading operations at the Bandag facility in Lanklaar, Belgium will cease in the coming months. In a statement issued today, Bandag Europe NV announced its intention to close the retreading plant, most likely in the first half of 2025. The company stresses that it has “no other option than to take structural measures” such as this in response to the “significant decrease” in the European retreading market over the past ten years, a trend that has resulted in production overcapacity and uncompetitive production costs.

The tyre manufacturer said it will invest about 1.464 billion yuan (about £160 million; €180 million) to add 20,000 giant engineering radial tyre production capacity. Through the new project, the tyre manufacturer is trying to “further optimise the product structure, seize the high-end market, and increase market share.”

Tyrepress China found that Shandong Province is trying to build two tyre industry clusters, Peninsula and Lubei, accounting for more than 80 per cent of the province, with revenue of 60 billion yuan and 80 billion yuan, respectively.

Russia’s government is supporting the construction of a new tyre plant in the east of the country. The Russian Far East and Arctic Development Corporation has entered into an agreement with Vladivostok-based limited liability company Vlad-Garant to set up a tyre manufacturing facility in Primorsky Krai, a region bordering both China and North Korea. According to the Corporation, the car tyre plant project will attract investments totalling 10 billion roubles (£84.0 million) and create 134 new jobs in the region. It anticipates that the plant will be operational by 2027.

At the end of 2023, India’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA) released a report which stated that India imported approximately 800,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres (ELT) between April and November 2023. The UK and EU member nations being the primary contributors. The UK was identified as one of the leading exporters of ELTs to India, supplying as much as 30 per cent of their import market. On 3 September, the EA clarified its position on the illegal export of ELTs to India for pyrolysis. Any waste export must be accompanied by a fully completed Annex VII. In response, the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) welcomed the EA’s statement of responsibilities and particularly the fact that it explicitly states that any waste export must be accompanied by a fully completed Annex VII.

Japanese general trading company Marubeni Corporation has announced its investment in Thailand-based waste tyre pyrolysis recycler Green Rubber Energy Company Limited (GRE). By investing in this venture, Marubeni intends to establish a tyre recycling supply chain in Thailand that encompasses the collection of end-of-life tyres and the production and sale of recycled materials such as recovered carbon black and tyre pyrolysis oil. Marubeni has not disclosed the size of its investment in GRE.

According to information supplied by stock exchange BSE, the company is offering up to Rs 2,300 million (£20.9 million) worth of shares, including a fresh issue worth Rs 2,000 million and an offer for sale of up to Rs 300 million by the selling shareholders.
