SBTI validates Pirelli’s net-zero-by-2040 goal
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved Pireli’s near-term and long-term targets on the reduction of absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The targets were communicated last March during the presentation of the 2024-2025 Business Plan update.

A little over two years after beginning a controlled exit from Russia, which resulted in the sale of its key regional passenger car tyre plant in Vsevolozhsk, Nokian Tyres has officially opened its successor. The company held an inauguration ceremony at its new passenger car tyre factory in Oradea, Romania today in the presence of government and other officials, together with Nokian Tyres’ Board of Directors, management team and some 200 guests.

Norgesdekk has bought 100 per cent of the shares in the Gothenburg-based Dexen AB through its Swedish holding company NDS Holdco AB. Dexen AB consists of, among others, the tyre and rim wholesaler Dexen Tire Movement AB and Hjulfabriken AB, which specializes in complete wheels for the car trade. Norgesdekk reports that “all employees will continue to participate in the initiative, and two key people will also become owners of NDS Holdco AB together with the current shareholders.”

Apollo Tyres has launched a new range of 20-inch all-steel radial tyres for multi-purpose trucks that operate on- and off-road. Each tyre in the Apollo Terra MPT 1 range features a self-cleaning tread pattern, closely derived from the Apollo Terra Pro 1045. Arguably the tyres main feature is a “specialised, highly durable compound” designed to ensure “traction and stability in extreme conditions” while offering “enhanced wear resistance” as well as “improved performance on challenging terrain”. Global sales are due to start in the first quarter of 2025.

As part of a project involving parties based in Japan and Indonesia, Bridgestone Corporation is working to develop technologies for preventing White Root Disease (WRD) in Para rubber trees. WRD kills rubber trees by infecting the roots with pathogenic fungi that causes tissue decay, and the disease’s onset is difficult to detect. By developing technologies to prevent fungal infection, the project aims to stabilise the yield of natural rubber and improve the productivity of plantations.

Bridgestone, Dunlop, Goodyear and Michelin branded aircraft tyres worth over $30 million (£23 million) have found their way into Russia “via intermediaries” despite being banned, according to Ukrainian government agency NACP. The Russian military’s ongoing need for tyres is well-reported in these pages. As is the fact that old, poor-quality and sometimes low-cost Chinese tyre imports have been failing on the battlefield. But now is the first occasion when premium brand tyres have been linked with the Russia-Ukraine war. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by Michelin, Goodyear, Dunlop or Bridgestone.
