Pirelli to premiere 18-inch Formula 2 tyres
After the postponement of the season opener due to the coronavirus, the first Formula 1 race of the year will take place this weekend at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. The same event will feature another premiere: Pirelli’s new 18-inch racing tyres will also be used for the first time, but initially only in Formula 2. Their debut in Formula 1 will follow later.

Dutchman Edwin van der Stad has been appointed as vice president OE Europe at Nexen Tire. Van der Stad brings 30 years of experience and premium level OE management with him to the Korean tyre manufacturer. Prior to joining Nexen, van der Stad spent many years with Bridgestone. Van der Stad’s new role took effect in March.

Rockwell Automation has announced the introduction of its VersaView 6300 family of Allen-Bradley Industrial Computers, which will be available starting August 2020. The launch of the VersaView 6300 family follows the May 2020 acquisition of ASEM S.p.A. and represents an extension of the company’s capability for industrial PCs (IPC), human machine interface (HMI) and secure Industrial IoT remote access solutions.

First, analysts warned in mid-May that Conti’s R&D budgets and European tyre factories could face cuts. Then the Hannover-based tyremaker responded by saying it is “intensively” monitoring European tyre demand and production. By June the CEO was warning staff of job cuts. Nevertheless, despite such clear challenges facing the wider automotive industry and beyond, the company is still advancing innovative solutions to the very complex problem. Colleagues at our German sister-publication, Neue Reifenzeitung, which can be found online at reifenpresse.de, found that the so-called “Corona bridge” concept is at the forefront of Conti’s work to address the adverse conditions and save jobs.

General Motors makes Hankook a 2019 Supplier of the Year Winner
Hankook Tire has been named a GM Supplier of the Year at a virtual ceremony honoring for General Motors’ 28th annual Supplier of the Year awards. GM recognised 116 of its best suppliers from 15 countries. It said these suppliers have “consistently exceeded GMs expectations, created outstanding value or introduced innovations to the company.” The ceremony, recognising supplier contributions in the calendar year, was delayed in March by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Committee and Council of the Foundation Salon International de lAutomobile has today decided it will not organise a Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) in 2021, it will not accept a loan from the State of Geneva and moving forward the sale of GIMS to Palexpo SA is the preferred solution. Organisers had previously said the 2021 show was very uncertain.
