Stellantis has recognised 68 global and regional suppliers, with 21 winners in their respective categories at the firm’s Supplier of the Year award. The fourth annual event, held on 24 September at the historic Lingotto Conference Center in Turin, Italy, was attended by over 200 Stellantis global suppliers and partners, underscoring the significance of the occasion. Tyre supplier Goodyear was recognised for its contribution to reducing the companies’ carbon footprint.

As part of its international expansion, Dealer Tire has now arrived in Germany and thus in Europe. The US company has been supplying car dealerships with exclusively OEM-marked consumer tyres for replacement needs in its home market for around a quarter of a century and launched this business model, which has been described as successful, in China seven years ago. Europe is the company’s next targe. Dealer Tire Europe, a GmbH founded in 2022, started business in Germany at the beginning of the year from a temporary location, but has now officially moved into a logistics property in Gernsheim, south of Frankfurt, which will soon cover 25,000 square metres. Tyres & Accessories’ German sister publication, Neue Reifenzeitung (NRZ) found out how Dealer Tire wants to make a difference at the warehouse inauguration.

Doublestar has held a ceremony to celebrate the start production at its Cambodia tyre factory. The factory’s total investment is about US$200 million. It is a joint venture between Doublestar and Zhongqi Holding Group. At total production levels, it will be able to produce 7 million semi-steel radial tyres and 1.5 million full-steel radial tyres per year.

Shandong Linglongs “Project Europe” is clearly picking up speed. The manufacturer has now flipped the switch for mass production at its tyre plant in Serbia – the first ever by a Chinese manufacturer in Europe – which was inaugurated in 2022. Without delay, Linglong is also tackling the second expansion phase of its so-called Smart Factory, thereby pushing the investment volume to 1.6 billion dollars. To honour this moment, the manufacturer hosted a number of customers and suppliers at a ‘Global Partner Conference’ in Zrenjanin, Serbia, in mid-September, but also used it to place ‘Project Europe’ in a broader context.

At the start of the week, AutoBild released the results of the qualification round for this year’s all-season tyre test. The finalists were chosen based on the shortest combined braking distances on wet and dry roads. Auto Bild assessed 15 popular all-season tyres in 225/50 R17, fitting each to a BMW 3 Series and subjecting them to 16 rigorous test processes designed to replicate a diverse range of real-world scenarios. After an initial 37-tyre qualifying round at the Automotive Testing Papenburg facility in Germany, the best-performing tyres underwent additional wet and dry testing at the Wachauring racetrack in Austria, followed by snow testing in the New Zealand Alps.

With road traffic fatalities now the leading cause of death for individuals between five and 29 years in sub-Saharan Africa, an international development organisation will start a new project designed to tackle this growing problem. Transaid has secured funding for a six-month project to deliver health and road safety messaging in the Mombassa port enclave in Kenya, focusing on commercial vehicle drivers. The grant from Lloyd’s Register Foundation will be used to reduce perceived barriers to quality health services in local clinics. Here, the organisation will also place key messaging around improved cargo and road safety, developed in partnership with transport industry leaders.
