Smithers expands its Suzhou, China tyre and wheel testing operation
Smithers has moved its tyre, wheel, and product testing operation in Suzhou, China into a larger 7,200 square meter building in the Xiangcheng district. As a result, the size of the product testing lab has increased by 90 per cent, with plans to invest in more testing equipment to further expand testing capabilities. In addition to laboratory space, the new building includes classrooms and conference rooms for on-site training and industry meetings.

Sailun evaluating car tyre production in Cambodia
Sailun Group is considering setting up a plant to produce tyres for passenger vehicles in Cambodia. According to a feasibility study published today, the Chinese tyre maker is interested in building a facility within the QiLu (Cambodia) Special Economic Zone in Svay Rieng Province that is capable of making five million semi-steel radials a year. Sailun estimates the project will require an investment of 1.18 billion yuan (£130.5 million).

Yokohama Off-Highway Tires EMEA raises prices
Yokohama Off-Highway Tires Europe Middle East and Africa (YOHT EMEA) has announced across-the-board price increases of 4.5 to 5.5 per cent. An official statement specified that the first price increase of 4.5 to 5.5 per cent was implemented on 1 Jan 2021. The new pricing will apply to the entire portfolio of Yokohama Off-Highway Tires EMEA (including the Alliance and Galaxy brands) and will take effect from 1 April 2021.

Brembo fourth-quarter net profit up +17.5%
Italian brake manufacturer Brembo has reported increased fourth quarter sales and pre-tax profits despite the corona-related loss in annual turnover the firm also reported. Fourth quarter 2020 revenues amounted to 649.7 million euros, up 4.5 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year. Pre-tax profits were (EBITDA) were 121.6 million euros (EBITDA margin: 18.7%). As result, the company’s net debt position improved by 121.0 million euros compared to 30 September 2020.

Tyromer building pilot tyre recycling plant in Arnhem, Netherlands
Canada-based Tyromer is building a factory Arnhem, the Netherlands as a pilot before bringing it circular rubber products to the European market. Tyromer told investment bodies that it will fine-tune and exhibit its recycling technology at its new Dutch facility in order to sell the process to third parties. Located at Kleefse Waard Industrial Park (IPKW) in Arnhem, the factory is currently being ready to start early in the summer of 2021. The location employ approximately 12 people.

Online tyre retailers Tirebuyer and Tirescanner have merged to create a new Tirebuyer.com that will be led by president and CEO Michael Welch OBE, who formerly founded Blackcircles and then Tirescanner. ATD (American Tire Distributors), Tirebuyer’s parent company, is the largest tyre distributor in the world. The new Tirebuyer will operate over 11,000 installer partner locations across the USA. According to the company, Tirebuyer sales day one are in the high eight-figure range. “We expect to climb sales to multiple nine figures over the coming years”. There is even talk of hitting the billion-dollar turnover mark.

Triangle Tyre has climbed three places in the China Net Promoter Score (C-NPS). Triangle’s fourth place score of 24.6 was enough to see it rise above Continental (fifth) and Goodyear (sixth) in the table. It is the leading Chinese tyre brand according to the metric, with DoubleStar the next-best in seventh place. Michelin (32.0) retains its place at the top of the table, with Pirelli (29.3) and Bridgestone (25.3) rising two places to make up the rest of the podium.

USA: Tyre makers’ association forecasts 4.1% rise in shipments
The trade association representing manufacturers producing tyres in the USA, the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), projects that its members will ship a total of 315.7 million tyres this year, compared to 303.2 million units in 2020 and 332.7 million units in 2019. This projected 4.1 per cent year-on-year increase in unit tyre shipments continues a positive trend seen in recent months – the USTMA reports that its members’ actual USA tyre shipments in 2020 turned out to be 4.9 million units, or 1.6 per cent, higher than the projected annual total it announced last November.
