Cars running on Yokohama Advan tyres have finished first in two open tyre supply divisions of the 99th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, which took place in Colorado, USA, on 27 June. The division champions were Raphael Astier, driving a 2015 Porsche BBI Turbo Cup in the Pikes Peak Open Division, and Randy Pobst, driving his 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid in the Exhibition Division.

Michelin owns 20% of Scandinavian Enviro Systems again after capital increase
Michelin once again owns 20 per cent of the shares in Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) following the dilution of its holding in May as a result of the completed new issue. The increase in its holding resulted from Michelin, via its subsidiary, acquiring two million of the shares that were issued in May to Unwrap Finance AB. Enviro has no information about the purchase consideration or the acquisition price.

On 27 June, Sailun Group officially inaugurated the modernised former Anchi Tyres facility in Weifang, Shandong Province. Group subsidiary Sailun (Weifang) Tire Co., Ltd. invested RMB 719.9 million (£81.3 million) to upgrade production at the acquired plant and implemented its improvements within a timeframe of just six months.

Camfin S.p.A. (Camfin) and Longmarch Holding S.à.r.l. (Longmarch), an investment vehicle owned by the Chinese Niu family which owns Chinese tyremaker Hixih, have entered into an agreement concerning the acquisition of shares in Camfin shareholding by Longmarch. The agreement represents the fulfilment of an April 2020 accord between Camfin and Longmarch, which included a call option for 4.89 per cent of Pirelli and means Camfin now owns 14.1 per cent of Pirelli.

Nissan investing £1 billion in V36Zero EV hub
Nissan is set to invest £1 billion Nissan in building what it calls EV36Zero, “a world-first EV manufacturing ecosystem”, according to the company. Located alongside the company’s Sunderland factory, the project sees Nissan partner with Envision AESC, a battery maker, and Sunderland City Council. Comprised of three interconnected initiatives, Nissan EV36Zero brings together electric vehicles, renewable energy and a 9GW of battery production. With plans for a new UK-made Nissan-branded crossover car model incorporated, the factory investment is also welcome news for the original equipment tyre business, which has been hampered by reduced production and factory closures across the country in recent years.

The more than R$700 million (£101.7 million) investment will go towards modernising the plant and increasing production capacity by more than 20 per cent. The project will begin by the fourth quarter of 2021.

Hankook & Company Co., Ltd., the holding company of Hankook Tire & Technology Co., Ltd., has expanded its cooperation with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) through the signing of a memorandum of understanding with its College of Engineering. This latest MoU centres on the ‘Symbiotic Transformation for AI-infused Reality (STAR) Project’ and seeks to “build a data infrastructure platform and strengthen cooperation in researches for the post-AI age.” One potential outcome of this collaboration is that data will later be used in Hankook’s tyre research and development.

Supercomputer grant aiding Continental’s research into tyre & road wear particles
Together with the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon in France, tyre maker Continental has received a grant worth 43 million core hours of supercomputer time. This grant comes through a Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) initiative and will speed up and expand the partners’ research into the decomposition of rubber polymers, a key aspect of the joint research they’ve conducted on tyre and road wear particles since 2014.
