Sumitomo Rubber boosting capacities at Brazil tyre plant
Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. is increasing production capacity for both consumer and truck tyres at its factory in Brazil. With an investment of 1.064 billion Real (£148.7 million), the company will boost capacity for passenger vehicle and light truck tyres from 18,000 to 23,000 tyres a day by April 2024. It will lift truck and bus tyre capacity from the current level of 1,000 tyres a day to 2,200 per day by April 2025.

Covid-19: Hankook pauses plant production
Within the next few hours, production will recommence at Hankook Tire & Technology’s Geumsan plant in South Korea following a 48-hour pause that began on 24 July after a number of workers tested positive for Covid-19. Health authorities have set up a test centre at the plant and intend to test around 3,000 employees early this week.

TIA board names Jarman as secretary
The Tire Industry Association (TIA) board elected Keith Jarman, president of AME International in Brooksville, Florida, as secretary on 23 June during its summer board meeting in South Dakota. A TIA Board member for nine of the past 12 years, Jarman’s election places him in line to become the association’s president in 2023-2024. He currently chairs the board’s membership committee. Jarman will begin his year as secretary in November and will move through the various officer positions until he becomes president.

With support from Bridgestone, the partners are gearing up to retread car, SUV and light commercial vehicle tyres in Béthune – products that Bridgestone intends to sell through selected retail outlets.

Amidst widespread economic and political unrest in South Africa, local tyre manufacturers have experienced significant disruption and even looting. Specifically, the Dunlop South Africa (formally Sumitomo Rubber South Africa Pty Ltd – SRSA) Durban Westville warehouse was “invaded” by trespassers and looters resulting in the loss of 90 million rand (£4.533 million; 5.255 million euros; US$6.190 million) of tyre stock. Such is the scale of the problem, the local tyre industry has embarked on a “say no to looted goods” campaign.

Retreading at former Bridgestone plant: Mobivia & Black Star partner in Béthune project
Major European vehicle maintenance and mobility firm Mobivia and French retreading specialist Black Star have signed an agreement covering the collection, sorting and retreading of passenger car tyres at the site of Bridgestone’s former Béthune plant in France. Bridgestone is lending its support to the project, which will commence in January and is expected to create nearly 200 jobs by 2025, thus providing employment for many former Bridgestone workers.

European car registrations up 25.2% in H1 2021
The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reports that passenger car registrations in the European Union increased again in June 2021 compared to the same month of last year, rising 10.4 per cent to 1,048,143 units. When factoring in the UK, which experienced a 28.0 per cent year-on-year increase to 186,128 new registrations, as well as EFTA markets, Europe-wide registrations of passenger cars increased 13.3 per cent to 1,282,503 units in June.
