SRI trialling hydrogen energy in tyre manufacture
This month, Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (SRI) begins a proof-of-concept study to determine the viability of harnessing hydrogen energy for tyre manufacture. The study will take place at SRI’s plant in Shirakawa, Japan and is being supported by national research and development agency the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

Falken nominated twice at 2021 International Motor Film Awards
Falken has received two nominations for its films at the International Motor Film Awards 2021”. The series #passthewheel (Best Journalistic Film), released in summer 2020, and the annual film about the Nürburgring 24-hour race (Best Event Film), are both on this years shortlist for the prestigious awards. Last year, Falken’s film, 20 Years in 20 Stories, created to mark two decades of the tyre brand at the Nürburgring, was the first from a European tyre brand to be nominated for Best Documentary Feature.

Ralson India acquiring local rights to Dunlop brand name
Tyre maker Ralson India Ltd, manufacturer of the Ralco tyre brand and a firm that calls itself “India’s fastest growing automotive tyre company,” has entered into an agreement to acquire rights to the Dunlop name in India. The company intends to produce premium Dunlop tyres for the powered two- and three-wheeler segments at its Kot Panech plant in Punjab.

Heuver is to expand its operations with a new Mounting Centre in Hardenberg. The tyre wholesaler says the new centre will enhance its focus on logistical services, an area in which it says it has particularly grown in recent years. The company is offering truck, agricultural and earthmover tyre fitment and wheel assembly on site, as part of its expanding service offering. Heuver says the assembly service shows it offers more than just tyres, with the centre a “logical continuation of its service.” In addition to the best advice and the right tyre for each application, the company offers customers a huge range from its 57,000m2 warehouse.

Shandong Linglong Tire has signed a strategic cooperation with Shandong Lingong, and no, this isn’t a typo. The Shandong, China-based tyre maker more commonly known as Linglong Tire entered into this arrangement with Volvo Group company Shandong Lingong Construction Machinery (SDLG) on 29 June. Wang Feng signed the cooperation on behalf of Linglong Tire, with Wen Degang, SDLG general manager, performing the honours for the construction equipment company.

Trolleybuses may be long gone from our roads, but the concept behind them is once again being evaluated, this time for HGVs: Although numerous governments and major truck manufacturers are exploring liquid fuel cell technology as a means of reducing CO2 emissions in road freight transportation, Germany is additionally considering an entirely different approach, with a government advisory body recommending railway-style overhead lines along 2,500 miles of its autobahn network. It is still uncertain whether the country will greenlight this unique solution, but automotive systems firm and tyre maker Continental shares that it’s already working to develop pantographs for the system.

Unicas turnover in 2020 amounted to 40 million euros, with a profitability “below Hexpol Group”, according to the business’s new owner. Unica will be consolidated into Hexpol from 1 July.

Established in 2020, AZuR is a German-based innovation network for end-of-life tyre recycling with a membership list that includes retreading and recycling firms, academia and state agencies. After receiving financial support from Germany’s government for the first ten months of its existence, AZuR has been self-funded under the patronage of the German Rubber Manufacturers Association (wdk) since June 2021. The network recently began a major study into the ecological and economic aspects of retreading, and reported yesterday that the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) has committed to support this work.
