Toyo Tire reports 23.8% sales increase in Q2 2021, return to profit
Toyo Tire Corporation achieved second-quarter 2021 net sales of 186,392 million yen (£1.217 billion; 1.438 billion euros; US$1.687 billion), an increase of 23.8 per cent compared with the same period in 2020. Compared with low levels last year, Toyo’s profitability also increased. Operating income amounted to 26,958 million yen, up 240.0 per cent.

The organizing committee of Citexpo have announced that the next edition of the Chinese tyre trade show will run from 12-14 December 2022 at the Shanghai World Expo exhibition centre. The last Citexpo (the 17th edition) was held in the summer of 2019 before the global Covid-19 pandemic caused havoc with largescale in-person events.

Techking Tires is opening its first Techking Service Center (TSC) outside its home market of China this month. This inaugural international TSC is located in Pakistan, one of the largest markets for Techking truck tyres. The Korean tyre maker’s engagement lifts the number of participating tyre importers to nine; in addition to Hankook, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear & Dunlop, Kumho, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo, Yokohama are involved with the scheme.

Prices for on- and off-road commercial tyres will increase by as much as 14 per cent, while prices for motorcycle tyres will be up to four per cent higher from the start of next month.

Bridgestone Americas (Bridgestone) has reached an agreement with tech-focused private equity firm Sumeru Equity Partners, connected vehicle specialist Danlaw and other shareholders to purchase Azuga Holdings, Inc. (Azuga) and the Azuga fleet management platform for US$391 million. Bridgestone says the acquisition will accelerate its efforts to develop and deploy sustainable mobility solutions as a “central pillar of the company’s advanced mobility strategy.”

Reporting the company’s experiences over the past 12 months, chief executive officer Peter Gibbons says that even though TireHub began its third year in the middle of a global pandemic, it nevertheless ended 2020 with “significant gains” compared with the industry, which was down overall.

This month, Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (SRI) begins a proof-of-concept study to determine the viability of harnessing hydrogen energy for tyre manufacture. The study will take place at SRI’s plant in Shirakawa, Japan and is being supported by national research and development agency the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
