Ukraine war continues putting tyre production under pressure
At the start of the year this column predicted a positive 2022 for the tyre business on the basis that we are better prepared for the unknown because of the adaptions made during the last few pandemic years. I still believe that. But my thesis is being tested by the implications of the now month-long war in Ukraine. All our expectations are being tested. For example, never before have I received an email which switches from normal editorial matters to “our country has been invaded” from one line to the next.

GripDetective.it, our partner B2C site in Italy, reports that proposed amendments to the country’s DL Energia (Energy Decree) would deliver a 200-euro bonus when buying a set of four passenger vehicle tyres that have scored an A or B for both wet braking and fuel efficiency on the EU tyre label. Italy’s parliament is currently examining this proposal.

Yokohama confirms 2.1 billion euro Trelleborg Wheel Systems acquisition
Three months after we published the news, The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., has confirmed that it has entered into a share purchase agreement with Swedish-based Trelleborg AB to acquire all outstanding shares of Trelleborg Wheel Systems Holding AB (TWS). According to Yokohama, TWS’s enterprise value is €2,040 million (about ¥265.2 billion). But the acquisition agreement includes a performance-linked earn-out clause, which could increase the acquisition price by up to €60 million depending on TWS’s 2022 financial results. And therefore Trelleborg refers to the sale as a 2.1 billion euro deal.

BWR Motorsports GmbH has developed technology which enables Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA tyre) testing to take place at the racetrack. Centred on a portable tyre testing unit called Motite, the system helps race teams across series such as Formula One and WEC to measure tyre grip levels and rank tyres on-track. The software allows an immediate grip level output and enables measurement and analysis to be carried out directly on the tyre.

Japanese tyre manufacturer Yokohama is stopping production at its L.L.C. Yokohama R.P.Z. passenger car tyre factory in Lipetsk, Russia. Yokohama said it will “gradually stop production” in Russia “due to the current problem of raw material procurement”. The company will also donate more than $400,000 to humanitarian relief efforts.

Bekaert’s Russia tyre cord plant receives strong domestic demand
Bekaert’s newly-expanded Russian tyre cord production operation is receiving strong demand – but solely from local producers. Speaking in the company’s full-year 2021 conference call on 25 February 2022, NV Bekaert SA CEO Oswald Schmid told investors that “all the business we do is for Russian customers. Theres no export outside.” At 12 years old, Bekaert’s tyre cord-focused Lipetsk plant is one of the firm’s newer plants. It employs about 500 people.
