Linglong Serbia tyre trial production underway in 1H 2022
Linglong Tires has confirmed earlier reports that trial tyre production at the company’s Serbia tyre manufacturing plant will commence by the end of the first half of 2022. In other words, the first tyres will roll off the Chinese tyre manufacturer’s Serbian production line by the end of June. Mass production is the next stop. However, since the first date refers to trial production, Tyres & Accessories understands that it will take till around August for the factory to achieve more deliverable output volumes.

Iochpe-Maxion increasing wheel capacities in Brazil
Wheel and automotive component manufacturer Iochpe-Maxion is investing R$100 million (£16.7 million) to expand its operations in Cruzeiro, Brazil. Work to increase truck wheel capacity in Cruzeiro will be finished in the first quarter of 2023 and boost annual output capability by 400,000 wheels, and when expansion of the plant’s agricultural wheel production capacity is completed in the third quarter of the same year, the Cruzeiro site will be equipped to produce a further 110,000 of these products annually.

ATD acquires Monro’s Tires Now business
American Tire Distributors (ATD) has entered into an agreement to acquire Tires Now, the wholesale tyre distribution business of automotive service and tyre provider Monro, Inc. The transaction brings seven Tires Now facilities across the Southeastern USA, which service more than 3,500 wholesale customer sites annually, into the ATD fold. In addition to servicing these wholesale customers, ATD will now also strengthen its strategic support for the tyre business conducted at more than 1,300 Monro retail outlets.

JK Tyre boosting car tyre capacity by 3 million units
JK Tyre & Industries intends to significantly increase its capacity to produce passenger car tyres. During an earnings call this month, managing director Anshuman Singhania confirmed that the tyre maker’s Board of Directors has approved an Rs 5.3 billion (£54.0 million) expansion of PCR capacity at its Banmore plant. Along with a recently commissioned debottlenecking programme, this will increase PCR capacity there by 35 per cent from its current level of around 9 million tyres per annum.

Pirelli has doubled the total number of tyre approvals on electric and plug-in hybrid cars in 2021. According to the company, car manufacturers are increasingly choosing this technology and have allowed Pirelli to expand the homologation portfolio to more than 250 total homologations on ‘green’ cars since the launch of the ‘Elect’ EV-specific marking in 2019. For example, the Audi A6 Avant e-tron concept, exhibited in the Pirelli stand at the Tire Cologne.

Mitas celebrates official opening of new two-wheeler tyre factory in India
Mitas’s newest two-wheeler tyre production facility in India has been formally inaugurated, following our early 2022 article that the factory was ready to commence production. The factory, which will serve global motorcycle tyre markets, is the result of a joint venture with the Mahansaria Group. The two companies are combining their expertise to bring Mitas tyre engineering into the two-wheeler tyre market. Both companies have been working throughout the challenges of the last two years, to test and produce tyres. The Mitas brand is part of Trelleborg Wheel Systems, whose sale to Yokohama for 2.1 billion euros was confirmed at the turn of the year.

Hella and Minth JV opens second production plant in China
Back in August 2020, we reported on the joint venture (Hella Minth Jiaxing Automotive Parts Co. Ltd) established between Hella and the Minth Group to develop and market radomes (absorbent covers for radar systems) and illuminated logos. We learned recently that the JV has put a second production plant into operation in the Chinese city of Jiaxing, to meet growing demand. The permeable covers for radar systems can be manufactured in special designs according to customer requirements and embedded in the radiator grille or in a customer logo, for example.
