This week marks the 53rd anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the surface of the Moon, a date of particular significance for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Goodyear supplied a number of essential components for this history-making mission and later developed non-pneumatic tyres for the Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle. The tyre maker is once again looking spacewards and is developing tyres for a lunar vehicle that in future may extend commercialism to the Earth’s rocky satellite.

GRI completes 2nd phase of specialty tyre plant expansion
Phase 2 of a US$100 million production capacity upgrade at the GRI specialty tyre factory in Sri Lanka is now complete, and GRI reports being in a position to increase capacity by almost 100 per cent from the present level, up to a daily output of 60 tonnes. This elevated capacity will satisfy the increased demand for farm tyres that GRI has enjoyed since launching agricultural ranges across key markets such as Europe, the USA and Australia in 2018.

Groupe Touchette acquires ATD’s Canadian subsidiary
Canadian tyre distributor Groupe Touchette Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire National Tire Distributors (NTD), the Canadian subsidiary of American Tire Distributors (ATD). The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2022, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions. Groupe Touchette says the addition of NTD will “significantly contribute” to its ability to serve customers and business partners while increasing the choices it can offer customers.

Black box now mandatory on new vehicles in EU
New vehicles sold in the EU are now required to have various items of new equipment installed; among the most important is a black box, similar to that installed in aircraft. With the progress of homologations relating to constantly developing driving aids this new measure has been enacted in EU law. Thus, from 6 July 2022, all new vehicles are to be equipped with a black box that which will record various types of data during phases of driving; acceleration, speed, braking, seat belt use and the use of headlights and turn signals will be archived in the system for one minute. The black box joins a number of other connected systems that new cars are required to fit to maintain safety standards, among them tyre pressure monitoring systems.

Pyrum to set up JV pyrolysis plant
German pyrolysis end-of-life tyre recycling specialist Pyrum Innovations AG has established a joint venture to build and operate a pyrolysis plant in Straubing, Bavaria. Together with a trio of partners, it will establish Revalit GmbH, a recycling plant with a capacity to process 20,000 tonnes of tyres per annum. Pyrum holds a 25 per cent share in the joint venture, as do Munich-based firms MCapital GmbH, Textor GmbH and Auer Holding GmbH. The plan is to have the facility operational by 2024.
