South Africa considering import duties for Chinese tyres
South Africa’s International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) announced in January that it would look at allegations of dumping levelled against importers of tyres from China. This investigation is still ongoing, but opponents warn that if authorities decide to apply duties to these products, the cost of tyres could increase by up to 41 per cent, with price rises for transportation and essential products a knock-on effect.

Goodyear buying German wholesaler Reifen Burkhardt
Goodyear is expanding its wholesale presence in southwest Germany with the acquisition of local player Reifen Burkhardt GmbH & Co. KG. The purchase of this family-owned tyre wholesaler brings into the Goodyear fold an operation with space to store 250,000 tyres and wheels in a 40,000 square metre warehouse facility. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the third quarter of this year.

Brembo and Chinese brake manufacturer Gold Phoenix have signed a 50:50 Joint Venture agreement to create Shandong BRGP Friction Technology Co. Ltd, the first large scale Brembo manufacturing facility fully dedicated to producing aftermarket brake pads. Brembo and Gold Phoenix have agreed to invest 35 million euros in the project over the next three years. Shandong BRGP Friction Technology Co., Ltd is expected to start operations in early 2023 in Jinan, the capital of Shandong province in Eastern China.

After four years as chief executive officer of German tyre and car service network ATU, Matthieu Foucart is returning to parent company Mobivia in France. There he will assume overall responsibility for the group’s workshop and specialist dealer business, which includes the Norauto, Midas, Auto 5 and ATU brands. His successor heading the four-person ATU management team is Sascha Bopp, who will take over as chief executive officer on 1 October 2022.

The family ownership of Hankook Tire and Technology must pay a fine of KRW 4.59 billion (£2.9 million) after losing a lawsuit related to foreign assets. Seoul-based publication The Korea Herald writes that the Seoul Administrative Court recently ruled against the lawsuit brought by Cho Yang-rae, honorary chairman of Hankook & Co., and his eldest son Cho Hyun-sik.

50% more tyres: Sumitomo Rubber USA expanding plant
Construction work to expand the Sumitomo Rubber USA plant in Tonawanda, New York is progressing following the official groundbreaking at the site on 29 March, and in the coming two to three years the tyre maker will invest US$129 million in a project that will boost production capacity by 50 per cent. After erecting a 5,100 square metre plant building this summer, Sumitomo will install new mixing machines, tyre presses and tyre building machines. Plant manager Tim Sprunger says the expanded facility will feature a high level of automation.

Guido Gambassi, former deputy secretary of the Italian Tyre Retreaders Association (AIRP) and tyre dealers’ association Federpneus, takes over as president of European retreading association BIPAVER this month. He succeeds Finland’s Jukka Lankolainen and will serve as president for a two-year period. Gambassi, formerly BIPAVER vice-president, was appointed to the top job during the association’s General Assembly 2022, which took place as an online event on 28 June.

Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) reports that its tyre factory in Turkey has gained ISO 50001:2018 certification for its energy management system. The Sumitomo Rubber AKO Lastik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. facility in Çankırı, which produces passenger and light commercial vehicle tyres under the Falken and Dunlop brand names, is the third factory in the Sumitomo Rubber Group to obtain ISO 50001 certification, following the previous certification of factories in China (Changshu) and Brazil.
