Germany’s Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) has approved Pneuhage Gruppe’s acquisition of tyre wholesaler Gewe Reifengroßhandel GmbH. New start with Gummistrada after T.T.I. insolvency
Just as too many cooks spoil the proverbial broth, multiple stakeholders can sometimes be problematic in the business world. Peter-Alexander van ‘t Hof tasted this particular broth a few months ago and found it bitter and unpalatable. Yet he isn’t letting this ruin his appetite for the tyre industry.

Rewarding success in the tyre business
In July, TyreSafe held its first post-lockdown in-person day conference and awards event. More recently the NTDA named the winners at its annual Tyre Industry Awards event. And our sister publication WhatTyre.com has also published names of the winners of its 2022 WhatTyre Tyre of the Year awards. What these three things have in common is that they all aim to give credit where credit is due. They all aim to reward success.

Tyre manufacturers expanding in a down market
June and July saw a spate of factory investment and opening announcements. First there’s the news that Linglong manufactured its first tyre at its brand-new Serbia tyre production plant at the end of June. Of course, this project has been underway for some time, but the fact that it got going just before the end of the first half of 2022 is noteworthy for two reasons. Firstly, notwithstanding the inhibiting effect of general market headwinds associated with pandemic fall-out and war in Ukraine, the project is basically on-schedule. And secondly, it demonstrates that no enthusiasm for Western and specifically European tyre production has been lost since the nullification of European import tariffs against Chinese-produced truck tyres roughly a month ago.

Two Nexen concept tyres, the Conqueror and Pureback, have been named finalists at the 2022 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) in the United States. These tyres were developed through a joint industry-academic collaboration with design students, Nexen Tire and The Korea Design Membership Plus (KDM+). Nexen says the partners’ focus was to create concept tyres that “can combat tough climate conditions and environmental challenges.”

Obtaining this official permit is a significant milestone for Pyrum as it verifies the approvability of its series production plants and means that future facilities can be built without facing official restrictions.

EU-27 plus UK tyre imports rise 11% as winners and losers emerge from turbulent market
Since March, cumulative passenger car and light truck tyre imports to the European Union and UK have, for the first time, recovered to run above pre-pandemic levels. This is despite the well-documented impact of sharply higher ocean freight costs in this period, and disruption to production in some source countries. A newly published report by Astutus Research, “European PCLT Tire Demand and Supply Forecasts to 2026”, shows that in the first seven months of 2022, European (the EU-27 plus UK)* imports from outside the region were 11% higher than the same period last year and 5% higher than the equivalent pre-Covid period in 2019.

Continental “working at full speed” to restructure rubber supply chains
The goal at Continental is to exclusively obtain natural rubber for its tyres from responsible sources as of 2030. Confirmation of responsible sourcing is essential to natural rubber’s status as a sustainable raw material, and gaining this confirmation requires traceability within the supply chain. Although completely seamless traceability is currently technically impossible, Continental says it is “working at full speed” on a blueprint for the sustainable and responsible structuring of natural rubber supply chains.
