Hankook’s Hungary tyre plant gains ISCC PLUS Certification
Hankook has attained ISCC PLUS certification (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) for its European production plant in Rácalmás (Hungary). According to the company, this is testament to the Hankook’s “unyielding commitment to sustainability, innovation, and environmental responsibility”. The tyre manufacturer reportedly plans to further intensify its activities in the area of long-term carbon neutrality and resource conservation by using sustainable raw materials, for example, in the iON tyre family designed for electric vehicles.

Despite a “complex market environment” the Michelin Group achieved “solid sales” in the past nine months, as chief executive officer Florent Menegaux emphasised yesterday when presenting the company’s latest financial information. According this Q3 2023 report, Michelin increased its sales by 2.0% to €21.15 billion in the first nine months of this year. This growth was driven by rising sales in the company’s Automotive and Specialty Businesses segments, which respectively increased 3.6% and 5.4% year-on-year. Sales within Michelin’s truck tyre business, its Road Transportation segment, were 4.3% lower.

Workers union the IGBCE has responded to Michelin’s “downsizing plans” in Germany – and as expected it isn’t thrilled. Matthias Hille, head of the union’s activities in the Mainz region and a member of the Michelin Deutschland Supervisory Board, comments that IGBCE “cannot at all comprehend the proposed cutbacks” and promises that these will “meet with our resistance.”

Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (SRI) is collaborating on a project to eliminate batteries in TPMS and similar devices by replacing these with electricity generated through tyre rotation. Reporting on the progress of its work with Professor Hiroshi Tani of Kansai University in Japan, the Falken brand manufacturer says the partners have successfully generated stable electricity over a wide range of speeds by employing two types of generating devices.

An investment of three million euros will enable the Michelin tyre plant in Gravanches, France to reduce its water extraction by 60 per cent. The company will erect an adiabatic tower that keeps water in a closed circuit, saving around 10,000 cubic metres of water a year – the equivalent of four Olympic-sized pools.

Whether Michelin intends to streamline its operations at these locations or close them entirely is not yet known.
