Nokian Tyres retains Dow Jones Sustainability Europe indexing
Nokian Tyres has retained its pace in the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index of the most sustainable listed companies in Europe. The manufacturer’s sustainability plan includes four key sustainability goals: reducing CO2 emissions in line with the company’s four science-based targets, increasing the share of either recycled or renewable raw materials in tyres, securing safer and better work and improving the sustainability of the supply chain.

Falken Tire Europe has announced its intention to adjust Falken and Sumitomo brand tyre prices effective at the beginning of 2024. The “adjustments” will affect Falken summer and all-season tyres for cars, SUVs, vans, light trucks, and trucks and trailers, while Sumitomo-brand summer car and van tyres will also be adjusted. Winter tyre prices will not be adjusted. The manufacturer has not yet released detailed information of the proportion or direction of the adjustments. Additionally, Falken’s UK representatives and exclusive distributor, the Sumitomo-owned Micheldever Tyre Services, told Tyres & Accessories that it was yet to confirm any new pricing details affecting the UK market.

Giti Tire will continue its support for European ice hockey into 2024. The manufacturer’s GT Radial brand will continue to be associated with the Champions Hockey League (CHL) as official tyre partner, and with top-flight Czech Republic team, BK Mladá Boleslav, for the 2023/24 season. Giti European marketing director Stefan Brohs said the company’s “marketing metrics show an increase in European brand awareness through our ice hockey partnerships.”

Machinery manufacturer Mesnac reports that its Mesnac European Research and Technical Centre (MERTC) recently “achieved a significant milestone” by becoming a member of the European Committee for Standardization’s (CEN) Tyre Curing Presses working group. According to the company, this membership not only “highlights the fruitful partnership between the Chinese and Slovak teams” at MERTC but also positions the Slovakia-based operation as “a contributor to the standard-setting process.”

Steel wire firm Bekaert shares that it has obtained the first third-party certificates for its tyre reinforcement with high recycled steel content and has delivered the initial batches of this steel to Bridgestone Corporation. According to the company, high recycled content halves the CO2 footprint of its product, and such certification helps meet demand from customers and end markets while addressing a “critical challenge in the industry.”

Nexen Tire lays claim to being the first Korean tyre maker to utilise virtual reality (VR) in the product development process. To strengthen its digital design process capabilities, the tyre maker has developed a VR design simulation system at the Nexen Central Research Institute in Seoul. It says this VR design review system allows users to “appreciate the scale of real tyres in a virtual space.”

Exclusive to Point S members, the first session of the new course was delivered to technicians from within the network at the Hella Training Academy in Banbury, Oxfordshire. Providing delegates with knowledge of the operating principles, components, and service requirements for ADAS, Point S will continue to offer its members the course in 2024.

The insolvency administrator handling the case reports that a firm called ISHManagementServices GmbH is planning to extensively invest in the Schiltach, Germany-based business. ISH is backed by İş Global Teknik İnşaat A.S., a family-owned holding group from Turkey.

Hyundai Motor and Kia have been busy of late. In addition to announcing their new Universal Wheel Drive System, the vehicle makers say they’ve developed a new snow chain-integrated tyre technology that eliminates the need to fit a vehicle with snow chains. The technology uses shape memory alloy modules located inside the wheel and tyre that protrude to act as a ‘snow chain’ when an electrical signal is received.

When Kumho Tire recently shared news about its tyre made from 80 per cent sustainable materials, we couldn’t help but notice that the accompanying artwork featured a different company logo than the one in use since Doublestar acquired the company. The tyre maker says this new logo is “designed to represent modernity, strength and commitment to the future,” but it also places further distance between the brand and former parent company the Kumho Asiana Group.

After plans to sell its entire network in Demark to NDI Group fell through earlier this year, Euromaster Group sold nine of its branches to Super Dæk Service. Under a separate agreement, the Michelin-owned company is transferring its remaining activities and employees to Vulkan Group ApS. It expects to finalise the deal on 1 January 2024.
