Bridgestone sells shares in China truck tyre plant
Following the closure of the Bridgestone (Huizhou) Tire Co., Ltd. (BSHZ) truck tyre plant in China late in 2021 and the relocation of its manufacturing to Shenyang, the former plant assets in Huizhou, Guangdong Province remained Bridgestone’s property. The company today agreed to sell all shares in BSHZ to Huizhou Zhongkai Xinye Development.

Pirelli proposes 31 July BoD renewal meeting
Yesterday, the Board of Directors of Pirelli convened to review the demands outlined in the Italian government’s Golden Power Procedure decision. Following deliberation, they reached a decision to recommend deferring discussions concerning the appointment of a new Board of Directors at the forthcoming shareholders meeting scheduled for 29 June 2023. Instead, they plan to address this matter during a subsequent shareholders meeting set to take place on 31 July 2023.

Toyo hosts event to mark Serbian plant’s first tyres shipped to Europe
Toyo’s European operation held an opening event at its Serbian factory on 5 June. The company was celebrating the start of deliveries to Europe of tyres manufactured at the plant; it had already been producing tyres for the North American market in Serbia as the plant went through the process of obtaining the correct certifications for Europe. With these procedures completed, the plant is now producing two patterns for Europe: the best-selling Proxes Comfort and the increasingly popular all-season tyre, Celsius AS2. These two products alone represent around 30 per cent of all of its tyres sold in Europe.

Restrictions placed upon major Pirelli & S.p.A. shareholder China National Tire & Rubber Corporation Ltd. include giving the remit of selecting the company’s chief executive to Camfin S.p.A. In a statement issued today, Camfin announces that it will nominate Andrea Casaluci to this role in addition to Marco Tronchetti Provera as Pirelli’s executive vice chairman. Giorgio Bruno, who was previously identified as Pirelli’s next CEO, is ending his tenure on the Board of Directors.

GT Radial has unveiled its “dual approach” strategy to the electric vehicle tyre market. The headline news is that the brand’s manufacturer Giti Tire has produced an initial three 18-20” sizes of the specialist GT Radial SportActive 2 EV tyre, with the 19 and 20-inch variations achieving the top AAA label rating. GT Radial has also introduced 16 “EV Ready” tyres in the brand’s popular SportActive 2 and FE2 portfolios, demonstrating the manufacturer’s strategy to supply both specialist EV tyres and products suitable for EVs and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Giti’s European managing director - product technology, Stefan Fischer explains why the tyre manufacturer views this approach as “a game changer”.

Pyrum, SUEZ building UK tyre pyrolysis plant
Pyrum Innovations is bringing its pyrolysis-based tyre recycling technology to the UK in partnership with SUEZ recycling and recovery UK Ltd. The two companies have entered into a one-year exclusivity agreement for a facility with three pyrolysis reactors that can process approximately 20,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres annually. During the year SUEZ will determine the plant’s location and, with support from Pyrum, begin and finance the approval process.

Michelin acquiring Flex Composite Group
Michelin is to acquire Flex Composite Group from private equity investor IDI for an enterprise value of €700 million, a transaction it expects will increase the revenue of its High-Tech Materials businesses by approximately 20% and create a “leader in high-tech engineered fabrics and films.” Michelin views growth here as an “important step” in developing “beyond mobility” and positioning the company as a ”key player in polymer composite solutions” in line with its Michelin in Motion 2030 strategy.

Strategic tyre sensors – Italy confirms Chinese shareholder restrictions for Pirelli
Italy’s government has identified tyre sensor technology as a national strategic asset and, with the stated aim of preventing misuse of this technology, has confirmed it will use the Golden Power procedure to limit the influence that shareholder China National Tire & Rubber Corporation Ltd. (CNRC) has upon Pirelli & C. S.p.A. According to statements issued by the government on 16 June and Pirelli two days later, a range of measures will now curtail CNRC’s involvement in the tyre maker.
