Following the completion of a period of transition, and with market volumes on the up, Goodyear Dunlop is aggressively pursuing sales growth, including winning some of the biggest fleets in the UK. Tyrepress spoke about the companys expansion strategy with Goodyear UK and Ireland commercial director, Marc Preedy at the end of August.

Goodyear Dunlop has won the contract to supply tyres to Eddie Stobart, the UK’s largest haulage fleet. The five-year contract, which took effect at the start of August, sees Goodyear Dunlop supply new tyres largely based around the company’s latest generation Kmax product offering to Stobarts and will be service by the Truck Force network.

Since the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge went viral a couple of months back, millions have doused themselves with icy water and uploaded a video of the proceedings, and many of the protagonists have performed the feat as a fundraiser for non-profit organisation the ALS Association or other motor neurone disease associations. Apollo Vredestein says that ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a harsh reality for several of its employees, and therefore last Friday the tyre maker took up the Ice Bucket Challenge gauntlet cast in its direction by Revalidatiecentrum Roessingh, a rehabilitation centre based near the company’s headquarters in Enschede, the Netherlands.

While many of its tyre industry compatriots favour sponsoring football clubs or championships, Nokian Tyres has set its bearings for involvement in two very different and demanding outdoor pastimes. The Finnish firm says it has signed a three-year co-operation contract with the International Orienteering Federation, and through this expects to gain “strong visibility” in the annual Orienteering World Championships and at World Cup events. Nokian Tyres will also act as title sponsor for the World Orienteering Championships in 2016 and 2017. Under a separate deal, the tyre maker is working with endurance event organiser Tough Mudder in the Central Europe region.

Continental Tyres has become the official partner of women’s football in Ireland after entering into an agreement with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI). The tyre maker takes on title sponsorship of the Women’s National League – now the Continental Tyres Women’s National League – and will also lend its name to the Continental Tyres Women’s FAI Cup, the Continental Tyres Women’s Senior FAI Cup and the FAI’s Elite Camps that foster the development of emerging football talent. The Continental Tyres Women’s National League got underway on 24 August, and the tyre maker’s support during the season is underpinned by the strapline ‘Getting you to the game safely’.

The winners of the global 2015 Michelin Challenge Design have been announced, with the tyre maker honouring 15 individuals and teams from the UK and nine other countries for their efforts. The winning designs for the latest challenge, which focused on the theme “Drive Your Passion: Engaging Senses, Soul and Emotion,” were selected from more than 1,100 registrants in 81 countries.

Accella Performance Materials, Inc., a manufacturer of polyurethanes, plastisols and recycled rubber products, has announced the acquisition of Zeus Tyrefill Systems GmbH (Zeus), manufacturer of tyre fill systems and flatproofing solutions for heavy duty industrial and “off the road” vehicles. Zeus will be a subsidiary of Accella Polyurethane Systems, further building the tyre fill business along with the Arnco and Pathway Performance Polymers subsidiaries. No price details have been revealed.

Michelin’s acquisition of all outstanding shares in Brazilian digital fleet management and freight security firm Sascar Participações S.A. and its affiliated companies, which was first announced on 9 June, has now been completed. The transaction has been approved by the Brazilian competition authority (CADE) and all other closing procedures were finalised on 29 August 2014.

The ATE sponsorship is in keeping with Continental’s sponsorship strategy and involves displaying the brand logo on stadium LED perimeter boards during all VfL Wolfsburg Bundesliga games.

The start of Italy’s Serie A football league on Saturday marked the beginning of Toyo Tire & Rubber’s activities as an AC Milan premium sponsor. The tyre maker is supporting the top-flight Italian team for the 2014-2015 season, and as premium sponsor intends to “aggressively utilise” content featuring AC Milan in its advertising material. In addition to developing and launching a collection of branded items for its customers, Toyo says it is also producing video content that will highlight AC Milan’s star players. The team’s activities and match results will also be updated to the Toyo’s Facebook page and “On and Off the Field” Tumbler page.

A year after announcing its initial partnership with Manchester United, Apollo Tyres has announced how the advertising and marketing cooperation has grown from covering just the UK and India initially to a total of 69 countries. The additional 67 countries cover virtually all of what can be called Europe - and even as far as Turkey, but does not include Russia. In addition the number includes the Middle Eastern markets Apollo has invested in developing its retail and distribution presence in recently. Further afield in the Far East - Thailand is also included. These markets are said to have been chosen based on their positions as influential and fasting growing markets. No details relating to the scale of investment associated with the partnership have been revealed. However it is said to have been “satisfactory for both parties.”

Following the unveiling of Federal Tyres’ latest marketing activity with Manchester United in Russia, Tyrepress got in touch with marketing manager Geoffrey Chang to ask a bit more about the attraction of the club and the English Premier League for a brand trying to make waves in Russia. Federal became the club’s Official Tyre Partner in the Russian and Taiwanese markets at the beginning of last season. While things haven’t gone entirely to plan on the pitch for any of the three men placed in charge of the club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure – most recently Louis van Gaal’s home defeat to Swansea – and doubts have been raised about Manchester Uniteds value as a brand partner (especially given its multiple tyre partners), Federal remains ebullient about the deal.
