Although the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) does not directly affect UK firms, stock-listed companies with EU subsidiaries and more than 500 employees must record CO2 emissions from this year for 2025 reporting. The CSRD will trawl its net further each year until, by 2027, the requirement to record CO2 data will apply to all UK companies with a non-EU parent and more than €135 million in EU turnover. Bridgestone Mobility Solutions says its Webfleet solution can help fleets impacted the CSRD.

Nokian Tyres is adjusting production at its Nokia passenger car tyre factory in Finland for “at least two weeks”. However, based on recent negotiations the production employees can be laid off due to financial and production related reasons for a maximum period of 90 days. The lay-offs result from “ongoing political strikes affecting ports and transportation in Finland”, according to the company. Nokian reports that that wider environment has led to “Nokian Tyres’ inventories of tyres filling up, as the company is unable to deliver tyres to its customers”.

During an earnings call with investors in mid-February, Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) did the closest thing possible to throwing its hat into the ring when it comes to buying Dunlop tyre brand rights when SRI executives acknowledged their interest in buying Dunlop in Europe and North America. Those rights currently belong to The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, which recently announced its intention to position Dunlop as a “strategic player within the high-end value segment of the market” to prevent direct competition against its main Goodyear brand within the premium segment.

Michelin reports that it is presenting a “new step forward with the development of a system for analysing small particles” as well as “the first research results to the scientific community and industry” during Tire Technology 2024. Details of this research were published in December 2022 and in March 2023. More recently, Michelin has made the system for analysing emitted light particles available to the tyre industry and to ETRMA (European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association). The ETRMA will furthermore conduct a campaign of measurements on a larger scale with the aid of an independent third party. The campaign will launch this year and will continue for around 18 months.

Nexen Tire is consolidating its three European entities (that is Czech Republic manufacturing and sales operation as well as its German sales and marketing led business plus its Italian mainly sales and marketing subsidiary) into a single Czech corporation. Business Korea reports that this initiative aims to “streamline business operations by centralizing dispersed bases within Europe”. Tyrepress.com’s sister titles in Germany and Italy (reifenpresse.de and pneusnews.it) have sought clarification and comment from the respective Nexen subsidiaries.

Bridgestone EMEA has officially opened a new “smart logistics facility” for tyre storage at its Burgos site in Spain. The more than 44,500 square metre ‘Tizona’ facility enables the company to store more than 800,000 tyres in one location. Billed as one of Bridgestone’s “most significant logistics centres in Europe” and the result of an investment exceeding 40 million euros, Tizona represents for the tyre maker a “large boost to the growth and development of its facilities in Burgos.”

The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has granted Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (SRI) certification for its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for 2030, deeming these to be consistent with scientific evidence. For Scope 1 and Scope 2, SRI aims to reduce absolute emissions by 55%, compared with 2017 levels. SRI’s target for Scope 3 and Category 1 is to reduce absolute emissions by 25%, compared with 2021.
