Grouptyre member EG Wholesale opens new West Sussex warehouse
Independent tyre distributor and one of Grouptyre’s 10 member EG Wholesale has opened its new warehouse in Partridge Green, West Sussex. Colin Obbard, operations and logistics manager said, “It has been a long time coming finding a suitable location for an expanding wholesale operation.” Grouptyre states that “continued investment” by members, “such as new warehousing, is one of the primary reasons for the continual growth of the company, who consistently strive to offer more to the retailer.” EG Wholesale is a division of a motor trade group that has petrol stations, convenience stores, property rentals and workshops. The family run business has been in business for over 40 years with a turnover of £48m and 230 members of staff.

Dunlop launches mixed long haul, regional commercial tyres
Goodyear Dunlop has launched its new range of Dunlop brand on road commercial vehicle tyres. The truck tyres have been designed to provide increased mobility: mileage has been increased by ”up to 10 per cent”; winter performance has been enhanced, with the steer and drive fitments receiving Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) certification; and fuel efficiency has also been improved, according to Laurent Colantonio, Goodyear Dunlop director of commercial tyre technology in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Blaby District Council switches to Michelin following X Works test set longevity
Blaby District Council in Leicestershire has switched to a Michelin tyre policy across its commercial vehicle fleet following a year-long trial on a set of Michelin X Works tyres. Most of the council’s fleet, which includes a mix of 18 Mercedes-Benz and Dennis refuse collection vehicles (RCVs), a 12.5 tonne road sweeper, two 5.2 tonne Iveco Dailys and a single 7.5 tonne DAF 45, plus 30 light commercial vehicles, now runs on Michelin products. All tyre servicing will be carried out by local dealership Lodge Tyres’ Leicester branch. The council is also specifying the tyres as original equipment.

Falken limbering up for Bundesliga playoffs
Sumitomo Rubber Industries has entered into a sponsorship agreement that makes its Falken brand the official tyre of all four 2015-16 season promotion/relegation playoff matches held by Germany’s Bundesliga football league. These matches take place between 19 and 24 May. The Falken brand will also be the official partner of the 2016 DFL-Supercup championship match between the Bundesliga league champion and the winner of the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) in August.

Despite organic growth of 5.1 per cent, revenues at Pirelli & C. S.p.A decreased 8.4 per cent year-on-year to €1.4 billion in the first three months of this year. Excluding the company’s Pirelli de Venezuela operation, which was deconsolidated at the end of 2015, revenues were down 4.2 per cent. This decline was driven by a 15.3 per cent year-on-year (this and the following figures, excluding net income, reflect Pirelli’s Q1 2015 performance minus its Venezuela business) drop in revenues within Pirelli’s Industrial business, which achieved revenues of €269.4 million in the opening quarter of 2016. Revenues within the company’s Consumer business amounted to €1.2 billion, 1.0 per cent less than the company recorded a year earlier.

A number of factors led to sales and income declining at Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. in the first quarter of 2016. The Japanese manufacturer reports that decreased vehicle production in Japan, lower global tyre prices and yen appreciation more than offset the benefit brought by cheaper raw materials. This was reflected in a 6.8 per cent year-on-year drop in net sales, which amounted to ¥129.3 billion (£822.4 million) in the three months to 31 March 2016. Sales within Yokohama Rubber’s tyre segment fell 6.9 per cent to ¥100.8 billion (£641.0 million).
