BBS presents its design contest winner
The winner of the BBS design contest has been announced, with the first prize of €10,000 prize going to two brothers. The creative minds behind the ‘Spoked wheel of today’ design are Davide and Dario Dornauer, who respectively study product design at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany and Automotive Engineering at the Cologne University of Technology. They were chosen from a total of 103 applications were received from 27 German universities and 20 design submissions.

At a meeting held in Brussels on 24 November to mark the first anniversary of the European Pact for Youth, Eduardo Minardi, executive chairman of Bridgestone EMEA, reiterated Bridgestone’s support for the programme. Speaking after the meeting, Minardi stated: “At Bridgestone, we are committed to making a continued contribution towards increasing youth training and inclusion in the work force. This includes more than 700 apprenticeships, traineeships and entry level jobs at our sales, retail, R&D and manufacturing sites across Europe under the Pact for Youth.”

Following its purchase of machinery for the production of 17-inch rim diameter tyres earlier this year, he Ukrainian tyre maker shares that it has acquired equipment from Germany’s Harburg Freudenberger that facilitates this jump to even larger sizes.

South Korea’s Kolon Industries has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Vietnam’s Binh Duong province regarding the set-up of a tyre cord factory in the region. At the ceremony on 23 November, Kolon Industries also announced its entry into a land lease contract with Vietnamese investment and development corporation Becamex IDC, under which the Korean firm will lease a 42-hectare site in Becamex IDC’s Bau Bang Industrial Park.

While the consumer pre-coverage of the Autumn Statement focused on government’s decision to ban upfront residential fees letting, in fact Chancellor of the Exchequer Phillip Hammond revealed something of his past as a transport secretary by announcing a series of investments in transport. At the top of the list, £23 billion to be spent on innovation and infrastructure over five years. The chancellor also announced £2 billion per year by 2020 for research and development funding. And £1.1 billion extra will be spent on English local transport networks. £220 million aims to reduce traffic pinch points. All are likely to support the development both the automotive manufacturing and fleet businesses the tyre industry relies on for growth.

Manchester tyre store PPM Autocare rebrands as HiQ West Gorton
HiQ has added Manchester tyre store PPM Autocare to its franchise network. The store, which has a good local reputation according to HiQ, will reopen as HiQ West Gorton. Commenting on the decision to move to the HiQ Network, workshop manager Phil Statham, said: “Having previously worked for HiQ I knew how PPM would fit well into the network. The level of support and communication we received prior to joining the HiQ network was excellent. It made the move to a HiQ branded store seamless. We are excited to see where the future takes us with HiQ.”

STARCO takes further step into OE with phase out of traditional aftermarket activities
A new chapter in STARCO’s history began on 1 July 2016 when German wholesaler Bohnenkamp took over a number of the Danish firm’s aftermarket operations, including the STARCO Eastern Group and aftermarket businesses in Scandinavia, Germany and, with one or two exceptions, the Benelux countries. The businesses were divested as part of an increased focus on the original equipment sector under the company’s 2020 strategy, and STARCO has now announced the next step in its path to becoming a pure OE player. In the months to 1 April 2017, STARCO will phase out its entire traditional aftermarket activities.

Swedish firm Trelleborg AB, parent company of the Trelleborg Wheel Systems tyre business, has finalised the acquisition of a US-based subsidiary of CoorsTek, Inc. The purchased business specialises in the manufacturing of precision seals for the aerospace industry, and Trelleborg anticipates that the new acquisition will further strengthen its presence in North America and in sealing solutions for major aircraft programmes. The transaction will be consolidated as of 21 November 2016.

In addition to their publication in eLife, the results were also presented at the International Rubber Conference (IRC 2016 Kitakyushu) in Japan on 26 October.
