Lanxess issues first hybrid bond
Specialty chemicals company Lanxess today successfully issued a hybrid bond with a volume of 500 million euros on the European capital market. The proceeds of the transaction are to be used for the financing of the planned acquisition of US-based chemical company Chemtura.

Cooper completes GRT shareholding purchase
Cooper Tire & Rubber has completed its purchase of a 65 per cent interest in China-based Qingdao Ge Rui Da Rubber Co., Ltd. (GRT). GRT produces truck and bus radial tyres for global markets and will manufacture these to meet Cooper’s customer needs in North America, as well as in Asia and other markets. In the future, passenger car tyres may also be manufactured at the one-million-square-foot GRT facility, which has room for further expansion.

Setting up factories abroad is not only encouraged by China’s Belt and Road initiative, it is also provides a means of avoiding the tariffs on China-made tyres charged by the USA and a number of other countries. Qingdao Fullrun Tyre Corp. Ltd. recently shared that, after numerous visits from company president Liu Zijin and a team of managers, on 28 September an agreement was signed for the company’s first overseas production facility. The plant will be built in Malaysia and is expected to enter operation in May 2017.

The third AC Milan video from Toyo Tire & Rubber is now online. Titled ‘AC Milan vs. Drift Cars’, the video was released globally today and features players from the Italian Serie A club, including Keisuke Honda, Alessio Romagnoli, Ignazio Abate and Gabriel Ferreira, perform in a coliseum alongside Toyo Proxes-shod Nissan GT-R and Toyota GT86 sports cars. Former AC Milan great Franco Baresi also makes a guest appearance.

End of the line for Michelin retreading plant
Last week, Michelins Pneu Laurent plant in Oranienburg, Germany – the company’s smallest retreading facility in Europe – produced its last retreaded truck tyre. Now the remaining 55-strong plant workforce (Michelin employed 180 people at the Pneu Laurent site a year ago) are engaged with clearing up and disassembling the most important production equipment in preparation for its installation in other Michelin plants.

Sailun Jinyu Group reports that the first all-steel TBR tyre was manufactured in its new factory in Vietnam on 24 November. In announcing the news, the China-based tyre maker notes that it decided to erect a second plant at its Sailun (Vietnam) Co., Ltd. site in order to combat the tariffs in place in the USA. It began work on the factory on 14 March 2016 and produced the first tyre just over eight months later.

The Shanghai Aerospace Industry Co., or SAIC, is said to have submitted the highest bid for Kumho Tire in the preliminary auction. According to Maeil Business News Korea’s Pulse website, the value of the SAIC bid hasn’t been disclosed, however “market experts” recently estimated that bidding for Kumho Tire could reach as high as KRW 1 trillion (£685.8 million).

Two significant international tyre businesses have become the latest companies to become members of the International Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA). Yanchang Rubber of China, and the Dutch Van den Ban Group have both joined the association, taking ITMA’s membership to new record levels. ITMA chairman, Alfred Graham said the complexity of the European marketplace – especially in the wake of Brexit – could make ITMA’s activities even more relevant in the coming years.

Renowned German photographer Peter Lindbergh, the man behind the 1996 Cal and co-photographer of the 50th anniversary edition produced in 2014, took up position behind the lens for a third time to create a work of art that shows a “different beauty.” He has titled next year’s Calendar ‘Emotional’.

Spinning the Wheel: Pirelli receives Graphis platinum award for annual report
Pirelli’s 2013 annual report, titled ‘Spinning the Wheel’, has been awarded a platinum medal in the Annual Reports 2014-2016 competition held by Graphis, a magazine dedicated to pre-eminent design production around the world. Spinning the Wheel was one of only eight annual reports to achieve platinum status; a further 77 were awarded gold and 92 received a silver medal.
