Acquisition expands Evonik’s silica horizons
The acquisition of a new business will see Evonik Industries AG extend its silica activities beyond tyres and other industrial applications. Evonik has acquired the silica business of US-based firm J.M. Huber for $630 million, a deal it says will enable Evonik to “expand its position in North America and Asia in this profitable and resilient business.”

DSV now exclusive Westlake distributor in Scandinavia
Under an agreement entered into with ZC Rubber Group Co. Ltd. and the Pneuhage Company Group, Danish transport and logistics company DSV A/S has gained exclusive distributor rights for the Westlake tyre brand in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. DSV will cooperate closely with official ZC Rubber European distributor Pneuhage to offer Westlake tyres to contracted hauliers and the wider commercial vehicle market in the four countries.

Mobivia Groupe to complete acquisition of tyre retailer A.T.U. this month
German tyre retail and fast fit chain A.T.U. has been sold to France’s Mobivia Groupe. Several hours ahead of a predetermined deadline, New York-based hedge Fund Centerbridge Partners LP, which has owned the network since 2013, successfully negotiated a significant rent reduction with the landlords of its outlet sites, including Lino Management, owner of 273 A.T.U. sites. According to reports, the annual leasing cost for the centres located on Lino-owned properties will fall from 57 million to 30 million euros. The rent reduction clears the way for Mobivia Groupe’s acquisition of the more than 600 A.T.U. centres in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Japan’s Sumitomo Chemical and Zeon Corporation are setting up a joint venture company to facilitate the integration of both firms’ solution styrene butadiene rubber (S-SBR) businesses. The resulting company will be called ZS Elastomer Co. Ltd. (ZSE) and will be 60 per cent owned by Zeon Corporation, with Sumitomo Corporation holding the remainin 40 per cent share. Sumitomo Chemical and Zeon will each succeed the rights and obligations of the sales and R&D functions their respective S-SBR business to ZSE.

Nokian Tyres has become a shareholder in diagnostics equipment firm Sigmavision, launching its own digital tyre checking service, branded SnapSkan. SnapSkan will use TreadReader Drive Over ramps to provide a service that SigmaVision says will help to advance its “Beyond the Workshop” strategy. Dr Andrew Pryce, Sigmavision’s managing director, commented “The opportunity to progress our ‘Beyond the Workshop’ strategy with Nokian Tyres plc is a significant step and we are also delighted to welcome Nokian Tyres as a shareholder in our business.”

Heuver expands sales team after growth in France
Heuver Tyrewholesale has expanded its team for the French market having increased its customer base in the country. The Dutch wholesaler has its own distribution centre in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier (near Lyon), which it says has helped to improve its service and increase business with French customers. Christian Bruder, a native Frenchman, has been added to the team as sales representative. Heuver states his appointment will further implement its geographical market vision, aimed at maximising customer satisfaction.

Up to almost 1,200 original equipment Pirelli tyres are being recalled in the USA due to concerns that cracks may develop in the tyres’ lower sidewall area. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the P Zero All Season tyres in question are size 275/40R19 101W fitments manufactured between 29 February and 29 October 2016 and fitted as original equipment on Maserati cars.
