Sigmavision to exhibit TreadReader devices at CV Show
Sigmavision is to promote its TreadReader technology to the commercial sector when it exhibits at The Commercial Vehicle Show (Stand 4F65, Birmingham NEC, 25-27 April). The company states that TreadReader “addresses the shortcomings of traditional dip gauges and other spot-measurement or laser-line devices currently available.” Each product in the range, which includes mobile and fixed workshop options, creates a 3D scanned image showing a 50mm band across the full width of the tyre. Sigmavision adds that its scans are reliable and accurate even on wet and dirty tyres.

Bridgestone offers new licence to commercial tyre technicians
Bridgestone has become the first tyre manufacturer to offer the Society of Operations Engineers’ (SOE) Commercial Tyre Technician Licence to employees of fleets across the UK. The company said the licence would raise standards and improve uniformity in the commercial tyre industry. Attaining the licence requires the completion of three practical assessments and an online test. It aims to regulate the industry and provide best practice with an approved standard that everyone can aspire to achieve. The licence is currently being rolled out, and Bridgestone UK development trainers Phil Thirsk and Paul Turner passed rigorous tests in October to become qualified assessors.

Toyo Tire & Rubber has reported a year-on-year decline in net sales, operating income and ordinary income for the 2016, and remained in the red for another year. Even though the company projected in November 2016 the expectation of profit of 12 billion yen, issues with certain non-tyre products led to an extraordinary loss recorded in the closing of accounts for the year, turning the projected profit into a loss of 12.26 billion yen (£86.1 million).

Bridgestone Corporation intends to acquire up to 50 million of its shares, or 6.4 per cent of its outstanding treasury stock. In a statement, the company said it would spend up to 150 billion yen (£1.1 billion) in the buyback, which will take place between 20 February and 22 December 2017. The acquired shares, along with a further 20 million shares, will be cancelled, effective 19 January 2018.

Versalis, Genomatica win TTI Award for renewable butadiene JV
Versalis, a European producer in the polymers and elastomers industry, and bioengineering firm Genomatica’s joint venture project to create renewable butadiene has been presented with Tire Technology International’s Environmental Achievement of the Year award. The companies embarked on the long-term project to address concerns around potential butadiene shortages and price increases. In a demonstration run in 2016, several kilograms of renewable butadiene were prepared starting from commercial sugars, with polymerisation tests showing no differences between the polybutadiene prepared from fossil or renewable feedstock.

Goodyear upgrading airship base ahead of blimp arrival
The Carson airship base, which Goodyear opened in 1968 to house members of its blimp fleet, is to receive major upgrades in order to accommodate the arrival of a new-generation Goodyear blimp at the site later this year. At the centre of this upgrade programme is a new hangar, the first in Carson. The inflatable hangar will be built out of 73 miles of partially translucent polyester fabric and will be almost nine-stories tall and longer than a football field.

Sumitomo Rubber Industries’ global brand Falken has won the Tire Technology of the Year Award at the annual awards for innovation and excellence. An independent panel of 27 international tyre industry experts presented the brand’s Advanced 4D Nano Design technology, the latest development of the pioneering work debuted by SRI in 2014, with the accolade on 15 February 2017 at the Tire Technology Expo in Hannover, Germany.
