It’s been the same old story for too long now – cheap tyres, overcapacity and low margins. For at least the last five years, Europe’s wholesalers have watched these factors eat too much of their profits. But has the page now turned? Deldo’s Tom Van Dyck thinks it has. In March, he shared with Tyres & Accessories his hope and expectation that current developments within the raw materials and logistics markets may give tyre industry players a new opportunity to make decent money.

Borbet ramps up production at plant in Saxony, plans new facility
The new Borbet factory in Saxony, Germany is visible from afar – hardly surprising when bearing in mind that the plant’s floorspace sprawls over five entire hectares. The factory is located on a 12.3-hectare site near Görlitz, around four miles from the Polish border, and there is a good reason for building big: Saxony is an automotive stronghold, home to several major German vehicle manufacturers.

When Goodyear Tire & Rubber first announced an intention to close its tyre factory in Philippsburg, Germany, it said it would do so by the end of 2017. The company now reports that the tyre manufacture will end at the site mid-year. In a press statement, Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany says that, together with employee representatives, agreed to wind production up by 31 July.

Peter-Alexander van ‘t Hof was only 13 years old when he attended his first tyre trade show, the Reifen show in Essen. An unorthodox venue for a freshly-minted teenager to spend his free time, however van ‘t Hof says he “found rubber cool” back then. He tells Tyres & Accessories that he still does, which is a good thing indeed, as three decades later the owner and director of Tyre Trading International (T.T.I.) spends much of his day dealing with the black, rubbery rings.

Bridgestone’s Russia tyre plant to officially open next week
An official opening ceremony for Bridgestone’s new passenger car tyre factory in Russia will be held next Thursday, states the tyre maker. Although commercial production at the Bridgestone Tire Manufacturing C.I.S. LLC facility began last December, on 25 May more than 200 invited guests, including key Bridgestone partners, suppliers and representatives from local, regional, national and also Japanese government authorities, will attend a ceremony at the 81-hectare plant site in the Zavolzhye Industrial Zone, some 560 miles southeast of Moscow.

‘Growing’ VMI opens new South America headquarters
Machinery manufacturer VMI says it is increasingly active in South America, and in response VMI South America Ltda has moved to a new and larger location. On 12 May, VMI South America opened its new facility in the Brazilian city of Itatiaia, approximately half way between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Managing director Robson Souza de Araujo and his team now have approximately 1,350 square metres of floorspace at their disposal, an area divided into workshop and office space.

Pirelli renews FIM Motocross World Championship supply deal to 2019
Pirelli has renewed its partnership with Youthstream, the organiser of the FIM Motocross World Championship. Under the deal the manufacturer will continue to be the official tyre supplier to the headline international series for off-road motorcycles until the end of the 2019 season. Pirelli has supplied the tyres for 66 world titles (since 1980) in the championship, and calls its Scorpion MX32 “one of its most successful tyres.”
