Micheldever ending Kumho tyre distribution in May
Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) has confirmed it is ending its 15-year tyre distribution partnership with Kumho Tyre in the UK. According to the company, the exclusive distribution agreement with Kumho Tyre will “end by mutual agreement” by the end of May 2018. However, MTS says the decision has also been prompted by a “clash of long-term ambition” for the Kumho brand in the UK. It comes at the same time Kumho’s global headquarters is embroiled in a complex ownership and financing struggle.

Nokian Heavy Tyres lifting production capacity by 50%
Through an investment of around 70 million euros in its factory in Nokia, Finland, Nokian Tyres group company Nokian Heavy Tyres Ltd. will increase its production capacity by 50 per cent over the coming three years. The maximum capacity for heavy tyre production will grow from approximately 20 million kilogrammes a year to 32 million kilogrammes. Alongside this capacity boost, approximately 50 additional people will be hired for the production of heavy tyres.

Production of Magna tyres will soon begin in Europe. In January, the Magna Tyres Group will officially open its own facility in the Netherlands. A factory has been set up at the Hardenberg site operated by Obo Tyres, the retreader acquired by Magna Tyres Group in late 2016. The company states that from January, the Netherlands will host the manufacture certain products in the Magna range.

As Linglong Tire notes, China imports more than 80 per cent of the natural rubber its manufacturers use. The company views rubber sourced from dandelions as a potential strategic raw material in the coming years, and in order to promote the industrialisation of dandelion rubber, it plans to invest RMB 30 million (£3.4 million) to set up a new company. The tentative name for this firm is Linglong Dandelion Science and Technology Development Company.

Toyo Tires releases 2016 annual report
Better late than never – as 2017 draws to a close, we can pour ourselves a hot drink, sit by the fireplace and peruse the Toyo Tire & Rubber annual report for 2016. The 61-page document outlines the company’s progress since introducing its Mid-Term 14 business plan and outlines the new Mid-Term 17 plan, which calls for net sales to increase (from the 2016 financial year) 25.8 per cent to 480.0 billion yen (£3.2 billion) by the 2020 financial year, and for operating income to rise 21.7 per cent to 60.0 billion yen (£397.9 million).
