GD2020 – Yokohama Rubber’s new mid-term management plan
The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. has unveiled a new medium-term management plan for the years to 2020. This new plan, dubbed Grand Design 2020 (GD2020), is the successor to the Grand Design 100 (GD100) plan that spanned the period from 2006 to 2017. GD2020 calls for a fortification of Yokohama’s business foundation by deploying a growth strategy that encompasses original approaches to each operational emphasis. Yokohama Rubber says GD2020 is a “framework for supporting new strides by Yokohama into the decade of the 2020s.”

Consumers are increasingly likely to research their tyres online pre-purchase, regardless of whether they complete an e-commerce transaction. Peer review website Tyre Reviews has therefore become an influential destination in the car tyre market: discussing Tyre Reviews’s audience, owner, Jonathan Benson, states that 94 per cent of Tyre Reviews visitors are engaged in the tyre buying process, with its users predominantly “high earning, well educated, male automotive enthusiasts looking for the best possible product for their vehicle.” In 2017, the site delivered 25 million pageviews to tyre buyers, and claims to have influenced around “one-sixth of UK tyre sales.”

In addition to its latest motorsport developments, Yokohama used the Autosport International show to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its flagship Advan car tyre range, launching a runflat version of the leading Advan Sport V105 tyre. Available in a number of key sizes from 16” – 20”, the Advan Sport V105 ZPS is designed as a replacement tyre for a number of rear wheel drive executive saloons fitted with runflat tyres as standard, the manufacturer states.

Michelin takes 20% share in A.T.U. auto service chain
The Michelin Group has purchased a 20 per cent share in German automotive services provider A.T.U. (Auto-Teile-Unger). The minority stake was acquired from French automotive maintenance and repair services group Mobivia Groupe for 60 million euros; following the acquisition, Mobivia and Michelin intend to combine their expertise in order to further develop A.T.U. in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Although Apollo Tyres Ltd. reports that its sales were up in the third quarter of its current financial year and exceeded Rs 40 billion for the first time ever, net profit for the period was lower year-on-year. The tyre maker’s net sales increased 16.9 per cent year-on-year in the three months to 31 December 2017 to Rs 40.16 billion (£451.1 million), while operating profit was up 1.1 per cent to Rs 5.43 billion (£61.0 million). Net profit was down -17.2 per cent to Rs 2.45 billion (£27.5 million).
