Continental fined for participating in braking systems cartels
Identified as a participant in two cartels related to braking systems, tyre and automotive systems manufacturer Continental has received a fine of just over 44 million euros for its involvement. The first of these cartels concerned the supply of hydraulic braking systems and also involved TRW (now ZF TRW) and Bosch. The second cartel concerned the supply of electronic braking systems and also involved Bosch.

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has reported full year 2017 net income of US$95 million, or diluted earnings per share of $1.81, a 61.7 reduction on the $248 million earned the year before. Income was affected by tax reform in the USA; the tyre maker states that excluding these discrete tax items, earnings per share would have amounted to $3.10.

Bridgestone, NRgene collaborate to sequence and assemble guayule genomes
Bridgestone Americas (Bridgestone) and NRGene, a genomic big data solutions company, are collaborating on research efforts to enhance the company’s US alternative domestic natural rubber breeding programme. They will be working in tandem to sequence and assemble multiple genomes of guayule, a rubber-producing plant indigenous to the hot, dry environments of the Southwestern United States and North Central Mexico, to develop new, high-yielding varieties. The first-ever, two guayule genomes have already been sequenced and completely assembled and a physical and genetic map are being developed which will provide a high level of accuracy and efficiency for breeding improvement.

Davanti launches runflat range in 6 sizes, including DX390, DX640 patterns
Davanti has launched its first range of runflat tyres following extensive research and development. The UK based brand spent several years creating a new runflat to “comfortably exceed” ISO-16992 guidelines on runflat performance (that a run flat must be capable of travelling a minimum distance of 50 miles at a speed of 50mph). Davanti adds that it wanted its first runflat to “match or surpass the performance of rival European brands” which have been producing these tyres for decades.

Arlanxeo, a global manufacturer of synthetic elastomers, has developed a rubber compound that can be used in the future to seal tyres. This solution for so-called self-sealing tyres replaces the spare wheel and also presents an alternative to a repair kit or run-flat tyre. A resolution was passed at Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd.’s Board of Directors meeting on 15 February to change the company’s trade name to Toyo Tire Corporation. This new name will be adopted as of 1 January 2019, provided that a proposed partial amendment to the firm’s Articles of Incorporation is approved at the Toyo general meeting of shareholders on 29 March.
