The Continental plant in Púchov, Slovakia recently achieved the distinction of becoming the companys first truck tyre manufacturing facility to gain International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS credentials. Púchov is Continental’s third ISCC PLUS-certified production site, following the tyre plants in Lousado, Portugal, and Hefei, China. Anton Vatala, who is in charge of the plant, calls the certification “a sign of our commitment to both quality and sustainability.”

Yokohama Rubber Co. is reportedly in “advanced talks” to buy Goodyear’s OTR tyre business. And what’s more, the Japanese tyremaker is said to be willing to pay “at least $1 billion”, according to Bloomberg reports which cite “people familiar with the matter”. The latest news confirms reports Tyres & Accessories obtained a month ago which suggested that four suitors had been particularly interested in the purchase.

The Michelin Group and Continental have reached a settlement agreement regarding the commercialisation in France of the Continental 315/45R22.5 EcoPlus HD3 tyre, in relation to certain aspects of Michelin’s Infinicoil technology. Reporting the agreement between the two tyre makers, Michelin says matters have been settled to both its own and Continental’s “satisfaction.”

Changes to UN/ECE Regulation No. 117 (R117) came into effect on 1 July 2024 and extend the regulation to include limits related to the wet grip properties of worn tyres. Michelin, which has long advocated for tyres that are safe right down to the 1.6mm legal tread depth limit, expresses strong support for the updated R117-04. In a statement issued this week, the tyre maker praises R117-04 for its role in “guaranteeing better safety on the roads” while also “addressing the issues of protecting both the planet and the purchasing power of European motorists.”

Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. has released the latest edition of its corporate Fact Book, and the publication lives up to its name by offering 52 pages of financial and operational information. The manufacturer of the Falken tyre brand dives in with reportage of its 2023 financial statements, including sales revenue of 1,177.40 billion yen (£5.71 billion), operating profit that rose 330.3 per cent year-on-year to 64.49 billion yen (£312.70 million), and profit for the year of 38.51 billion yen (£186.71 million), a year-on-year increase of 209.1 per cent.

According to government information and local media reports from the USA, a significant fraction of the 1,300-strong workforce at the Bridgestone tyre plant in Des Moines, Iowa clocked off for the final time last Friday. Exactly how many is unclear: State department Iowa Workforce Development reports that 89 workers were scheduled to be laid off on 5 July; while broadcaster KCCI Des Moines says that all 216 of Bridgestone’s planned layoffs at the site took place that day.
