Continental, Osram sign lighting JV contract
Negotiations between Continental and lighting manufacturer Osram have concluded with the two parties in agreement on the shape and form of their new Osram Continental GmbH joint venture. Each of the partners will hold a 50 per cent share in the business, with Continental’s Harald Renner acting as chief financial officer and Dirk Linzmeier from Osram taking on the role of chief executive officer. Osram Continental is expected to be up and running in the second half of 2018 once all necessary approvals have been granted.

Doublestar acquires 45% share in Kumho Tire
After months of uncertainty, union members within the Kumho Tire workforce voted on 30 March to accept the sale of a 45 per cent stake in the tyre maker to China’s Doublestar Tyre. It is understood that just over 60 per cent of voting union members were in favour of the sale, sparing Kumho Tire from receivership. The deal with unionised employees was sweetened by guarantees of their job security for at least the coming three years.

Michelin Ballymena site to be turned into business park following factory closure
Michelin has announced plans to convert part of the site of its closing Northern Ireland manufacturing plant to a business park following its sale to Silverwood Property Developments. The tyre manufacturer will complete the closure of its Ballymena plant in June, after the last tyre rolls off its production line in April, ending 50 years of manufacturing. Some of the site – reportedly around 10 acres – has been earmarked for Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, as it attempts to win its bid to host a regional Heathrow Logistics Hub, supporting proposed construction work at the West London airport.
