T.T.I. futureproofing with continued growth, new products
As far as years go, 2017 was a special one for Tyre Trading International (T.T.I.). Early on in the piece it delivered growth through the acquisition of Van Aalderen Twen-Tyre, it then witnessed expansion with Reifen Kraftwerk and was rounded off by organisational restructuring following the sale of the company’s Motoria business. T.T.I.’s owner Peter-Alexander van ’t Hof sees last year’s changes as a “big step” for the wholesaler, and 2018 is also looking to be a red-letter year.

A ceremony was held on 6 July to mark to completion of Doublestar Tire’s acquisition of a 45 per cent share in Kumho Tire. The event in Seoul was titled ‘Celebrating New Beginning’ and was attended by the Chinese and South Korean tyre makers’ management teams as well as representatives from Korea Development Bank, which together with other creditors still maintains a 23 per cent share in Kumho Tire.

In recent years we’ve seen a number of tyre makers introduce noise reduction technologies that utilise foam insulation, with Continental, Hankook, Bridgestone, Sumitomo Rubber, Goodyear amongst those bringing their own version of the concept to market. Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd. has taken a different approach and sought instead to cut noise by modifying airflow within the tyre cavity. It calls its solution Toyo Silent Technology.

On 29 June 2018, Trelleborg inaugurated its new European logistics hub for material handling and construction tires and its new Benelux commercial office in Evergem, Belgium. The new premises consist of a 10,000 square metre warehouse along with offices to house the Benelux commercial office for Trelleborg Wheels Systems. Holding more than 70,000 tyres in stock, Trelleborg Wheel Systems can serve its European warehouses and key customers in the region from this facility on a JIT basis.

Tyre maker and technology company Continental has acquired a 100 per cent shareholding in Czech machine tool manufacturer VÚK. The purchase of VÚK strengthens its presence in the city of Otrokovice, Czech Republic, site of the company’s largest tyre manufacturing facility worldwide. Continental says it intends to leverage VÚK’s strengths to drive forward its development and production of technologically advanced tyre assembly machinery.

In a letter to BSE, Ceat Ltd. has confirmed entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of India’s Tamil Nadu state. The tyre maker told the stock exchange that the MoU for setting up a new greenfield facility covers an estimated investment of Rs 40 billion (£437 million) over a period of ten years. It adds that passenger car radials, commercial vehicle radials and two-wheeler tyres will be produced in the plant.

At the end of May, anti-Chinese truck tyre tariffs were implemented. They included nominal (as opposed to percentage) tariffs at levels that surprised many. As a result, supply shortages and challenges at distributors were predicted. Shuttering of some of the lowest cost Chinese tyremakers is also expected. However, speaking to affected firms during the recent Tire Cologne reveals that many are already prepared to source tyres elsewhere. Indeed, the largest manufacturers have been off-shoring for some time. As a result, virtually all the leading Chinese tyre manufacturers already have non-Chinese tyre production in place.
