Shire Aggregates has specified Michelin tyres as original equipment across 12 new MAN 32-tonne 8x4 tippers and adopted a Michelin policy as standard for future tyre purchases. The decision came after a trial set of Michelin X Works tyres demonstrated potential savings of “more than £26,000 a year” in running costs, the company states.

Yokohama Rubber has introduced a procurement policy for sustainable natural rubber based upon the Sustainable Natural Rubber Initiative (SNR-i) launched by the International Rubber Study Group as well as the main proposals made by the Tire Industry Project (TIP) at the World Rubber Summit 2018 in May. With its policy, the tyre and rubber products manufacturer addresses concerns such as unlawful deforestation, land exploitation, human rights violations, and adverse effects on biodiversity. Not only will Yokohama Rubber adhere to the procurement policy, it will also promote it through its supply chain.

Commercial tyre management specialist Tructyre Fleet Management, has adopted an advanced telematics solution from Ctrack, an Inseego company, which will be used to help monitor and improve driver behaviour and fleet productivity. Tructyre will use the web-based vehicle tracking system across a fleet of more than 150 vans and HGVs to achieve greater visibility across the company’s UK operation. It will also be used alongside integrated driver communication, fleet management and reporting tools. This should increase staff engagement, gain operational control and realise added performance insight, the company states.

Cooper Tire Europe is to enter a 10 month consultation period to decide the future of light vehicle tyre production at its Melksham, Wiltshire facility. News sources suggest that light vehicle tyre production currently in Melksham would be shifted to its factory in Serbia, pending the outcome of the consultation. The company states that the proposed change is a result of the “cost-competitive, globalised environment.” It adds that the Melksham facility “in its present form is not competitive within the Cooper global manufacturing network or the tyre industry at large.” It is Cooper Tire Europe’s highest cost production facility, and the company adds that it considers expanding or updating the facility to meet its light vehicle tyre needs to be “not economically feasible.”
