Autopromotec 2019 has opened with reports of a 4.4 per cent increase in the number of exhibitors. At the same time, total surface amounts to 162,000 square metres, 4,000 square metres larger than the last Autopromotec event in 2017. More than 1,650 companies are exhibiting and the share of non-Italian companies is 43 per cent, from 53 different countries.

Continental opens 3D printing competence centre
Continental’s Tire division is just one company division expected to benefit from the opening of a new competence centre for 3D printing. The facility, located at the Continental Engineering Services plant in Karben, Germany, offers a variety of modern 3D printing technologies, such as a Selective Laser Melting (SLM) machine, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Stereolithography (SLA), Digital Light Printing (DLP) and Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM).

Mahle invests in Service Solutions centre
Mahle responds to significant market interest for Mahle solutions in the area of workshop equipment by laying the cornerstone for the construction of a new Service Solutions centre in Parma. The three locations of Mahle Service Solutions will now be brought together under one roof, across an area of 15,000 square metres. In the future, the location will develop and produce equipment for the maintenance of air conditioning systems and transmissions as well as diagnostic tools and equipment for the calibration of driver assistance systems.

Nokian Tyres thinks it is, so much so that the company has signed a sustainability linked loan agreement with the OP Corporate Bank. The 100-million-euro loan with a five-year term is being used to pay off a similar-sized loan that is due in May.

Autogem expands commercial vehicle product range with TPMS
Autogem has launched a new replacement tyre pressure monitoring system for commercial vehicles. Its universal TPMS sensor is designed to increase efficiencies for fleet operators with in-house fitters and tyre dealer networks, promising greater flexibility and convenience. Autogem said the system was developed to address a number of issues in the market, including regular breakages of internal valve mounted sensors at tyre dismount, the difficulty in identifying sensors from the outside of the wheel, and battery failure due to higher mileage and high usage. Autogem adds that it has found original equipment batteries are depleted by “up to 30 per cent” on the shelf before they are fitted.

MWheels launches SOE CPD approved CV wheel training course
MWheels has launched the Wheel Awareness and Security Fleet Training programme. The classes will be delivered by renowned industry instructor, Phil Thirsk. The Manchester-based wheel services provider said that the new programme represents a new phase for its approach to commercial vehicle wheel safety. For many years, MWheels (formerly known as Motor Wheel Service Distribution) has campaigned for greater legislative support in ensuring the safety of wheels fitted to commercial vehicles, culminating in a change to EU law, which saw wheels categorised as a safety critical item. It has also collaborated with Michelin Training Centre to improve wheel safety knowledge within the industry. The announcement of the programme coincides with a wheel-loss incident receiving front-page coverage on the BBC website, in which a loose lorry wheel collided with a vehicle on the opposite side of the M6 Motorway in Lanacashire.

Following a month of orientation, Nokian Tyres has sent the first group of employees hired for its new factory in the USA on a six-week training experience at its facilities in Russia and Finland. The training trip’s aim is to equip members of the Dayton, Tennessee plant launch team with the skills they’ll need when beginning the production process ramp-up ahead of the start of commercial production in 2020.

TomTom is set to return roughly 750 million euros to its shareholders after the sale of TomTom Telematics to Bridgestone for 910 million euros closed in April 2019. According to the company, TomTom will return the money on 27 May, through a consolidation of shares. Telecom Paper reported that for every 16 shares, nine will remain, resulting in the repayment of 5.74 euros per remaining share. This is said to be equivalent to 3.22 euros per share, based on the number of outstanding shares before consolidation.

Michelin buys Masternaut
Michelin has agreed to buy the entire share capital of Masternaut, one of the largest European telematics providers, for an undisclosed amount. While not price details have been released, according to the company, the transaction has been made on the basis of eight-times 2018 EBITDA before synergies. Masternaut will continue to operate under its own brand as a fully-owned subsidiary within Michelin, and the transaction is expected to close within the next sixty days.

Hankook: Companies renamed to establish unified brand
In the coming weeks and months, we’ll see name changes applied to companies within the Hankook Tire Group. Hankook Tire Worldwide, holding company for the South Korean firm, has been renamed Hankook Technology Group, while a number of subsidiaries have been rebranded to emphasise the core Hankook brand. Core affiliate Hankook Tire changes its name to Hankook Tire & Technology.
