ZC Rubber revisits Jiangsu factory plan
After a 12-year pause, it appears that ZC Rubber decided on 12 August 2024 to restart its project to set up a tyre manufacturing facility in Jiangsu, China. The reactivated plan calls for an investment of RMB 5 to 6 billion (£539.1 million to £646.9 million), some 25 per cent less than the investment first announced in June 2012. ZC Rubber intends to build a 410,000 square metre production facility on a 56-hectare site. Construction will take place between 2024 and 2026 and result in a plant with a capacity to make 25 million semi-steel tyres annually.

Bridgestone, in collaboration with Kwik Fit, reports making its “biggest impression ever” at the British Motor Show, conducting over 800 tyre safety checks and showcasing its products through innovative holographic displays. This year’s event, held at Farnborough International from 15 to 18 August, marked Bridgestone’s third consecutive appearance. The company had the opportunity to engage with over 70,000 visitors. Bridgestone and Kwik Fit also served as exclusive partner sponsors of the Motorsport Arena and Hall Five.

Direct Tyre Management Limited (DTM) is under new ownership. Self-managed investment trust company Caledonia Investments plc has acquired a majority stake in the independent outsourced fleet tyre management services provider for £55 million. The DTM management team has reinvested alongside Caledonia to obtain 100 per cent of the business from investors, including Palatine Private Equity.

The European Commission has approved Romanian state aid worth 99.5 million euros (RON 495.2 million) to support the construction of Nokian Tyres’ new zero-CO2 tyre factory in Oradea, Romania – the first such factory in the world. Nokian Tyres says its total investment in the project is worth 650 million euros. Construction started in May 2023. Once completed the factory will produce approximately 6 million tyres per year with the potential for future expansion. The first tyre was produced on 1 July 2024. Commercial production is due to start in early 2025.

In the U. S., J. B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc., Bridgestone Americas and Kodiak Robotics, Inc., have celebrated an ongoing collaboration that has surpassed 50,000 autonomous long-haul trucking miles, incorporating Kodiak autonomous trucks to ship Bridgestone passenger car tyres between South Carolina and Dallas. Since launching in January, the autonomous route has been driven with no accidents and achieved 100 per cent on-time pick-up and delivery, according to the companies.

Nokian Tyres is investing in a new production line for heavy tyre inner tubes at its factory in Nokia, Finland. The company expects that the first inner tubes made in Nokia will be ready in the first half of 2025. Production in Nokian replaces the manufacture of inner tubes in Lieksa, Finland, where production will end in stages during 2025.
