Apollo Tyres had to accept a drop in its turnover and earnings in the half-year to 30 September 2020, with the notable exception of sales in Europe. The company’s global sales in the first half of its current April 2020 to March 2021 financial year were Rs 70.62 billion (£728.85 million), 13.9 per cent less than the sales it gained a year earlier. Net profit dropped 71.1 per cent year-on-year to Rs 650 million (£6.71 million).

Triangle Tyre Europe has strengthened its team with the addition of two new managers. Corrado Moglia, general manager in Europe, said the appointments demonstrate how the company is focusing on the development of the brand in Europe. “We have recently added two valuable managers to our European team, Ayhan Haliloglou as OTR technical & sales manager, Europe, and Steve Eke as sales director for the UK & Ireland.”

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (publ) and Michelin expect the final agreement regarding their strategic partnership will be reached during the fourth quarter 2020 rather than at the end of October, which Enviro previously communicated. The coronavirus pandemic is cited as the reason for the delay in negotiations.

An independent advisory committee to the UK Department of Health has found no compelling evidence that exposure to tyre and road wear particles poses a health risk at current UK concentrations. Based on a review of present scientific knowledge, the updated position statement recently published by the Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants (COMEAP) extends to all non-exhaust particles from road transport, including brake wear and road surface particulates.

Following the news that Elmar Degenhart is stepping down as Continental AG chief executive at the end of the month, Nikolai Setzer is being touted as his most likely replacement. On 12 November 2020 Continental AG’s supervisory board is scheduled to meet. Deciding the successor to outgoing CEO Elmar Degenhart will no-doubt be top of the agenda. According to the German Handelsblatt newspaper, Nikolai Setzer has been lined up to take over from the outgoing Conti boss.

Ford posted better-than-expected figures for the third quarter, recording a net income of $2.4 billion. However, David Leggett, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData, suggested that the company could be facing tough times ahead. Says Leggett: “Like several other carmakers, Ford is getting a boost from higher demand – especially in the US – after the pandemic-induced low points earlier this year. High margin trucks are selling very well and there are signs of a turnaround, too, in China which has been a disaster area for Ford in recent years.

RH Claydon has today become the exclusive UK distributor of Triangle truck and bus and off the road tyres. The change of distributor for the brand follows Tym International’s decision to cease trading on 30 October. The specialist tyre importer-wholesaler, in which Triangle took a strategic holding in 2013, announced its liquidation in early September. Tym’s managing director, Steve Eke, has since been appointed UK & Ireland sales director of Triangle Tyre Europe. The Chinese tyre manufacturer, among the country’s top five according to Tyrepress data, set up a new European team headquartered in Milan in 2017 under general manager Corrado Moglia. Commencing its distributorship, RH Claydon stated that it looks forward to building a strong relationship with the brand.

The rebrand is the first for the automotive software provider since April 2013 and sees the launch of an updated logo, as well as a new website. Five months on from its groundbreaking ceremony, the first pictures from Shandong Jinyu Tire’s new Vietnam truck and bus radial tyre factory show the progress made so far. At its May 2020 event, Jinyu said the new tyre manufacturing plant would have an annual capacity of 2 million tyres in its first stage, supplying mainly European and North American markets. At its completion, due March 2024, Jinyu would have an annual capacity of 7 million TBR tyres, with a global sales footprint.

Finnish prosecutors have decided to press charges against six former members of the Nokian Tyres plc board as well as past president & chief executive officer Ari Lehtoranta; all were associated with the company in the period between 2015 and 2016. It additionally intends to impose a corporate fine upon the company, to a maximum of 850,000 euros. The prosecutor has also decided to press charges for suspected abuse of insider information against four persons who were employees of Nokian Tyres in 2015. In a statement supplied to Nasdaq Helsinki yesterday, Nokian Tyres stresses that “all persons charged deny their involvement in any criminal activity”

Although his contract has almost another four years to run, Dr Elmar Degenhart has notified Continental AG of his intention to step down as chief executive officer and as director of the Continental Executive Board. Dr Degenhart’s decision to take leave of the company on 30 November 2020 is based upon “reasons of immediately essential preventive health care,” he informed Continental’s Supervisory Board yesterday. In the near future, Professor Wolfgang Reitzle will convene the Supervisory Board to decide upon the appointment of Degenhart’s successor.

Hankook Tyre UK is TyreSafe’s Tyre Manufacturer of the Year for 2020. It is the second consecutive year that Hankook has won the award, recognising Hankook’s significant contribution to raising driver awareness of tyre safety-related issues. Over the past twelve months Hankook UK launched three tyre safety campaigns across social channels including Facebook and YouTube. TyreSafe chair and chair of awards judging, Stuart Jackson said: “Hankook’s commitment to raise awareness on tyre safety resulted in a well targeted campaign, which highlighted specific messages relevant to their core age group. A good library of resources was created to support it resulting in a programme of clear and engaging content.”

Synthetic rubber and plastics manufacturer Trinseo has reached definitive agreements with Swiss sustainable tyre recycling specialist Tyre Recycling Solutions (TRS) on a commercial collaboration and an equity investment in TRS. The transaction is expected to close later this quarter, subject to ordinary closing conditions.
