Vision 2030: Continental targets tyre markets in Asia, North America
The Tires business may have been an area of strength for Continental in 2020, but this doesn’t exempt it from the company’s recently-expanded restructuring plans. Upcoming changes include the closure of the tyre factory in Aachen, Germany, a facility Continental calls its “most cost-intensive” site in Europe. Continental covers these changes, and indeed its overall roadmap for the tyre segment, in its new Vision 2030 strategic programme.

Bridgestone in talks with 2 tyremakers about Béthune factory sale
Bridgestone announced plans to close Béthune, France factory back in September 2020. Now, however, the location looks likely to retain a role in the broader automotive sector after the Japanese tyremaker reported that it has identified 24 opportunities relating to the future of the site. Two of the options relate the sale of the site to other tyre manufacturers. Five of the identified projects concern the installation of new activities on the site in tyre and rubber fields as well as batteries and other sectors. Two of the proposals relate to “the installation of activities outside the site”. Nine projects are said to be in the study phase.

TVS Srichakra doubling off-highway tyre capacity
TVS Srichakra Ltd., the two- and three-wheeler as well as off-highway tyre manufacturer, is planning a 10 billion rupee (£102 million; 112 million euro; US$135 million) investment programme. According to the company, the investment will increase two- and three-wheeler tyre production capacity by 25-30 per cent and double of off-highway tyre capacity from current levels.

ChemChina entrusts Aeolus with Prometeon Tyre Group shares
Aeolus Tyre Co Ltd and its controlling shareholder, China National Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd (CNRC, which is itself owned by Chinese petrochemical giant ChemChina) executed a “share entrustment agreement” on 30 November 2020. According to the agreement, CNRC will “entrust” its 52 per cent shareholding in Prometeon Tyre Group Srl to Aeolus for three years. But the three-year term will be automatically renewed upon expiry.

Continental has demonstrated real-time tyre tread depth monitoring during a pilot project with Danish carsharing provider Share Now and telemetry specialist Traffilog. The project confirmed Continental’s ability to predict tyre tread depth in real-time to an accuracy within one millimetre.

Michelin to fit RFID in all car and truck tyres by 2023
Michelin has announced pioneering plans to equip all its new car tyres with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips by 2023. Continuing its long history in the development of tyre-orientated RFID technology (including the global launch of a truck tyre RFID solution in 2012) Michelin says up to 1.5 million RFID-equipped car tyres will be delivered as early as 2020.

Awardees for 2021 include Continental, whose Urban Taraxagum bicycle tyre caught the judging panel’s attention. The tyre is an award-winner in the Responsible Design category.

Autodoc triples tyre sales, reports 600 million euro total sales in Q3 figures
Online car parts business Autodoc is reporting sales of 600 million euros in the first three quarters of 2020, up 40 per cent compared to the same period last year. In 2019, the company’s revenue between January and September amounted to a total of 434 million euros. Autodoc chief executive Alexej Erdle has now set his sights on the previously announced sales target of 800 million euros by the end of the year, up from 615 million euros in 2019.

Continental AG is aiming to be completely carbon-neutral by 2050. One of the earliest landmarks in the plans sees Continental move to being carbon-neutral in some areas within two years. Specifically, from 2022 Continental will make its global business for emission-free cars, buses, trains and other vehicles carbon-neutral. The programme covers the company’s production processes as well as their upstream stages and recycling at the end of use. Davanti Tyres opens European Development Centre at IDIADA
Davanti Tyres is opening a European Development Centre at Applus+ IDIADA. The brand, owned by the UK’s Oak Group, says the centre will “spearhead its next-generation tyre design.” Davanti has previously used the Spanish facility, located in the northeast of the country near Barcelona, in the development of its tyres. It says the facility will allow its research and development team to experiment more with innovative new designs and materials, speed up new product development, and enhance ongoing testing and improvement of its existing range. General manager Peter Cross calls the move “the biggest step Davanti has taken since we brought our first tyre - the DX390 - to market.”
