Kwik-Fit is offering 200 apprenticeships at the companys centres across the UK, providing opportunities for many school leavers to work close to home. Most of the two year apprenticeships are available to 16-18 year olds, providing a valuable first step on a career in the automotive sector. Kwik-Fit has trained more than 1,800 people under its current apprenticeship programme. Over the last 15 years the scheme has consistently seen higher success rates than the national average, with many participants progressing to senior levels within the company.

Motor industry professional body IMI has called on employers to consider increasing the starting salary for apprentices by more than 70 per cent to compete with academic career paths. Steve Nash, CEO of the Institute of the Motor Industry, will explain that return on investment research demonstrates that most companies could increase starting salaries from the legal minimum set by Government of £2.73 to £4.73 per hour without loss of profitability. The IMI has launched an apprentice calculator to help demonstrated its point to businesses.

The warning follows IMI sponsored research from the Industry Apprentice Council (IAC), which showed that 45 per cent of current industry apprentices had received poor or no advice and guidance on their career choice. Meanwhile, less than 10 per cent said a careers advisor or teacher had helped them find out about apprenticeships. There is currently no statutory requirement for young people to have access to face to face careers advice.

The Alliance Automotive Group has acquired the United Aftermarket Network (UAN) from shareholders Andrew and Rachael Dickinson. As a result of the acquisition, Jim Mazza, the current managing director of Groupauto, will move to a new role of managing director of Alliance Automotive Group UK trading groups. A new Groupauto MD will be recruited, Alliance adds. Andrew and Rachael Dickinson will remain with the business to transfer ownership efficiently, while Phil Dodd will immediately fill the Managing Director’s position at UAN. Both UAN and Groupauto will continue to operate as separate networks; Alliance says both brands will play to their strengths.

Shingo Sakashita, 46, has been appointed finance director Falken Tyre Europe, the European affiliate of Japanese tyre manufacturer Sumitomo Rubber Industries. Sakashita joins the management team in Offenbach am Main (Germany), assuming the position of finance director, alongside Isamu Ishida, Koji Fukuhara and Hidekazu Nishiguchi.

Apollo Tyres has announced details of its recruitment drive in Hungary for its soon to be built Greenfield facility at Gyöngyöshalász. Apollo plans to appoint 100 technicians and fresh graduate engineers soon, with a second drive to recruit a further 150 people in the second half of 2015. Although production will only start at the beginning of 2017, the first batch of employees for the Hungarian factory will be contracted in the beginning of July 2015. Besides technicians and engineers, the company is also seeking applications for various functional areas including administration and logistics.
