Toyo revises corporate roles
Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. has made the following changes to its array of corporate officers and other executives. All roles are effective 1 November. Tetsua Kuze is now corporate officer and general manager of Toyo’s DT Planning Division, DT Business Group Headquarters, DT Strategy and Planning Dept. and DT Business Group. Kuze had previously been senior corporate officer and general manager of the administrative division as well as general manager of the Corporate Planning Division overseeing corporate purchasing division headquarters. He remains deputy general manager, Seismic Isolation Rubber Division

Kumho’s first North American tyre plant is due for completion in early 2016. The facility is sited in Macon, Georgia, close to Atlanta Airport, which Kumho explains is the busiest in the world, and under 180 miles from the international port of Savannah. Kumho aims to strengthen its position globally and in the key North American market, and has invested $420 million in the factory so far. When complete, the building will cover 21 acres, and produce around four million tyres per annum. Around 90 staff are already engaged on site, a figure that will rise to 400 by the time of next year’s opening.

Karen Cole, director of training for the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), has been shortlisted for a national award in recognition of her work on motorcycle safety – her third this year. Two previous awards were presented at the beginning of the year, one for ‘services to rider and safety training’, and another for ‘outstanding achievement in motorcycle safety’. On 22 October she will find out if her team has won an Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) ‘IMI Specialist Centre of the Year 2015’ award.

The study, commissioned by insurance company There researched the sick day habits of 25 different industries. Transportation and distribution workers take more time off work due to serious injuries sustained on the job than almost any other industry.

28,000 new jobs could be created in the UK automotive supply chain by 2020, according to a new forecast report from industry trade body The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The report, “The future of UK automotive manufacturing in 2025 and beyond”, identifies growth in vehicle manufacturing and a move to connected and autonomous technology as presenting significant opportunities for British component suppliers in the coming years. It estimates that British car production is set to reach a record two million vehicles annually by 2020 – a 33 per cent increase on the current 1.5 million.

Pirelli has announced its support for the Apprenticeship Charter from Unite and TUC. On Thursday 01 October, Pirelli representatives signed the Apprenticeship Charter at the firm’s Carlisle facility in front of members from Unite, TUC and Cogent as well as a selection of current Pirelli apprentices and managers within the engineering, maintenance and quality departments.

NTDA honorary life member Findlay Ferguson Picken died aged 84 on Friday 25 September after a long struggle with Parkinson’s decease. Announcing the news, the NTDA directorate team and executive officers of the association commented that they were “very sad” to hear of his death and added: “our thoughts are with Findlay’s wife Jean and his family and friends.”

Trinseo, a materials company that supplies latex and synthetic rubber products to tyre manufacturers, has announced a number of leadership changes. All changes are effective 1 November 2015. Martin Pugh, currently senior vice president and Business President for Performance Materials, has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO) of Trinseo. He will report to Chris Pappas, president and CEO of Trinseo. In this newly created interim role, Pugh will elevate his focus to stimulate and support cross-business optimization initiatives; lead, mentor and partner with the new Business Presidents on key strategic business issues; and support strategic efforts across the company.

Al Dobowi Group, which is well known for importing and exporting tyres around the world, has appointed Malcolm Wall Morris as group chief executive officer effective immediately. This is the first time Al Dobowi has appointed a group CEO in the company’s 40-year history. According to Al Dobowi representatives, the decision – taken in the firm’s 40th anniversary year – reflects the understanding that the family business “needs to develop and evolve to ensure that we are best positioned to continue growing for the next 40 years”.
