Magna Tyres Group has expanded its global sales team through the appointment of Christophe Cantou as sales manager for the Southern France region. He joins the company with over 15 years of sales experience within the tyre industry, having held positions at a number of well-known tyre firms. He begins in his new role on 14 March and will work alongside Peter Schreudering, who has been with Magna Tyres since 2012 and also serves the French market as sales manager.

Roy V. Armes, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Cooper Tire & Rubber, has announced his intention to retire on 31 August 2016. According to the company’s succession plan, the Cooper Board of Directors will appoint incumbent chief operating officer Bradley E. Hughes to the roles of president and chief executive officer effective upon Armes’ retirement, and Hughes is also expected to join the Board of Directors at that time. Thomas P. Capo, who is now lead independent director, is expected to become the Board’s non-executive chairman upon Armes’ retirement.

Travis Kang, president of Nexen Tire and son of company chairman Byung-Joong Kang, has taken on the additional role of chief executive officer. He succeeds Lee Hyun-Bong, who had held the position since 2010. Kang junior’s assumption of this second senior office was confirmed at the Nexen Tire annual shareholders’ meeting, which took place on 17 February.

Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is offering to help the Inquiry into the Government’s 2020 apprentices target, announced by the Sub-Committee on Education, Skills and the Economy. Steve Nash, CEO of the IMI, which champions the cause of apprentices, has written to the Chair of the Sub-Committee offering its extensive research into the issue. The IMI reports that the industry it represents needs 12,000 apprentices a year to stand still.

In a statement released today, Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd reports that Tadanobu Nagumo, currently CEO and chairman of the company’s board, will relinquish the role of CEO in the first half of this year. This change was decided at the company’s board meeting today and will be formally approved following Yokohama Rubber’s general meeting of shareholders on 30 March 2016. No successor for the position of CEO has been named. Nagumo will continue to serve as chairman and board representative member.

There could be as many as 5,000 job vacancies in the UK automotive industry due to a skills shortage affecting the sector, according to a new report published by the Automotive Council. The report, which was developed by automotive industry consultants SMMT Industry Forum on behalf of the Automotive Industrial Partnership, surveys a range of British-based automotive firms, from vehicle manufacturers to component suppliers, to identify the areas of employment most difficult to recruit, and provide an important means for industry and government to tackle the skills issue. Around 19 per cent of the unfilled vacancies cited in the report are identified as ‘critical’ and having a significant impact on company operations.

At its Board of Directors meeting on 9 February, Apollo Tyres Ltd confirmed the appointment of Francesco Gori as an additional, non-independent company director. Mr Gori, who served as chief executive officer of Pirelli Tyre between 2006 and 2012, joined Apollo Tyres as advisor for strategy in October 2015. Vinod Rai, the former comptroller and auditor general of India, was also appointed an additional, independent director of Apollo Tyres during the meeting, and approval was given for a change in Robert Steinmetz’s directorship status.
