TIA elects John Evankovich as secretary
At its AGM, between 22-24 June 2016, the Tire Industry Association (TIA) board of directors elected John Evankovich as its new secretary. He will begin his one-year term as secretary on 31 October 2016. After that year, he will proceed as vice president, then president, then past president; all of these positions are for one-year terms.

On 1 July, Yokohama Rubber completed its acquisition of the Alliance Tire Group. The Japanese company’s new subsidiary is now headed by Toru Kobayashi, formerly assistant to Yokohama Rubber president Hikomitsu Noji, who has been appointed Alliance Tire Group chairman.

This in turn led to calming statements from Bank of England governor Mark Carney, who reassured investors of Britain’s financial capabilities and contingencies.

George Payne, a well-known and respected member of the tyre and tyre consumables market, has died at the age of 64 from the effects of motor neurone disease. Working in the tyre industry since leaving school, Payne fitted tyres and owned a tyre retail shop. He later moved into tyre procurement and latterly wholesaling tyre consumables.

Promising tyre fitters from around the UK and Ireland have assembled in Stoke-on-Trent for the launch of Michelin’s 2016 Tyre Academy course. The 10 fitters, selected from dealerships within the Michelin Certified Centre (MCC) network, were invited to the manufacturer’s UK headquarters for the first Tyre Academy module, which combined classroom and workshop-based education at Michelin’s dedicated training centre.

Effective 1 July 2016, Enno Straten has been appointed managing director of Continental’s Commercial Specialty Tires (CST) business unit. He succeeds Dr. Michael Märtens who left the company last year to concentrate on other projects outside the industry. Straten, who has worked at Continental for 17 years, will report directly to Dr. Andreas Esser, executive vice president of Continental Commercial Vehicle Tires.

Klaus Kreipe holds this position as Vice President and manages the business field from Hanover-Stöcken. In his new role, he reports directly to Andreas Esser, executive vice president and head of Continentals Commercial Vehicle Tires business unit. Kreipe succeeds Peter Matzke, who has retired after almost 40 years working in different functions at Continental.
