End of an era: F1 farewelling 13” tyres this weekend
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina this weekend will be the last race in Formula 1 history run on 13-inch tyres. After more than half a century of racing on this tyre size, Pirelli is introducing its new 18-inch tyres in 2022. To celebrate the changing of the guard, all the 13-inch slick tyres used in Abu Dhabi will carry a special logo on the sidewall: ’Next year I turn 18’ – underlining the switch to 18 inches by bidding farewell to the current tyres before welcoming the new size next year.

The Superstock class of the FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC) is set to become a Dunlop-shod contest thanks a broadening of the partnership that began in 2016. In addition to extending its agreement and EWC Official Partner status with championship promoter Discovery Sports Events for a further three years, a three-way deal between Dunlop Motorcycle Tyres, the promotor and the International Motorcycling Federation also confirms Dunlop as the exclusive tyre supplier to the popular Superstock class for near-standard superbikes.

Giti Tire’s Martin Gibson secured third place at an action-packed season finale of the 2021 British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC) at Brands Hatch. A capacity crowd watched Gibson finish fourth, second, fifth and third over the first four races. Entering the last race still in contention for the title, Gibson’s truck sustained a catastrophic hit at the Paddock Hill bend in traffic resulting in his retirement to the pit lane and ending his challenge.

Pirelli has welcomed the president and chief executive officer of Formula 1 to Circuito Panamericano, the tyre maker’s most advanced proving ground. Stefano Domenicali is currently visiting the region to attend this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix, and during yesterday’s tour of the facility was accompanied by Mario Isola, Pirelli’s head of F1 and Car Racing, and Cesar Martin Alarcon, Pirelli’s chief executive officer and executive vice-president of the LatAm region.

The FIM MiniGP World Series was launched earlier this year as the “newest path on the Road to MotoGP” and to serve as an umbrella for the various national, regional and continental MiniGP competitions, such as the FIM MiniGP UK Series. Through its partnership with FIM, Dorna Sports S.L. and Ohvale, Pirelli serves as sole tyre supplier, and to equip these bikes the tyre maker has presented its first NHS competition range dedicated to small motorcycles with 10- and 12-inch wheels, such as pitbikes, minimotards and scooters.

The GT Radial 2021 Fun Cup Endurance Championship car was piloted by vlogger and esports gamer Jimmy Broadbent and director at Tegiwa Imports, Luke Sedzikowski at Oulton Park. The pair finished 10th in the one-hour sprint race, but exited the four-hour race after an hour and 34 minutes due to gearbox failure in the penultimate rounds of the 2021 championship. Nevertheless, Broadbent’s 25-minute video detailing his participation at the event has racked up more than 135,000 views so far, demonstrating the Giti brand’s social media strategy for the series.

New Zealander Courtney Duncan was crowned champion for the third time in as many years.
