Continental, Osram sign lighting JV contract

Negotiations between Continental and lighting manufacturer Osram have concluded with the two parties in agreement on the shape and form of their new Osram Continental GmbH joint venture. Each of the partners will hold a 50 per cent share in the business, with Continental’s Harald Renner acting as chief financial officer and Dirk Linzmeier from Osram taking on the role of chief executive officer. Osram Continental is expected to be up and running in the second half of 2018 once all necessary approvals have been granted.

New director at Michelin’s Bamberg tyre plant

As of 1 April, Jens Schlemmer is director of the Michelin car tyre factory in Bamberg, Germany. He returns to Michelin’s operation in his homeland after working in plants around the world these past 14 years. Former plant director Thomas Nagel has taken on a new leadership role within the Michelin group.

Nokian Tyres’ CFO Anne Leskelä to leave company

Anne Leskelä, Nokian Tyres’ chief financial officer and vice-president of Finance and IR, announced today her resignation from the company. She will continue in her position until the beginning of July 2018, and the Finnish tyre maker reports that the recruitment process to find a new chief financial officer will commence immediately.

A Michelin engineer by your side – market launch for connected tyre solution

When it brings a new, special version of its Pilot Sport Cup 2 to market this month, Michelin will become the first manufacturer to sell a connected tyre solution for private cars. The Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect is a tyre aimed at amateur drivers who take part in track days and other circuit events. When paired with the newly-launched Michelin Track Connect solution, it can provide a wealth of real time tyre information.

Doublestar acquires 45% share in Kumho Tire

After months of uncertainty, union members within the Kumho Tire workforce voted on 30 March to accept the sale of a 45 per cent stake in the tyre maker to China’s Doublestar Tyre. It is understood that just over 60 per cent of voting union members were in favour of the sale, sparing Kumho Tire from receivership. The deal with unionised employees was sweetened by guarantees of their job security for at least the coming three years.

Dunlop OE on Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

The Dunlop Enasave EC300+ is being fitted to the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross as original equipment. Announcing the supply arrangement, Sumitomo Rubber Industries comments that the new compact SUV is being sold globally, however the tyre maker doesn’t specify whether its products will be fitted to Eclipse Cross models destined for all regions or only in specific markets. The new Mitsubishi will wear the Enasave EC300+ in size 215/70R16 100H.

Toyo Tire shareholders approve change of company name

Shareholders of Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd. approved the official change of company name to Toyo Tire Corporation at the company’s 102nd General Meeting of Shareholders on 29 March. The change of company name will take effect on 1 January 2019.

Yokohama Tire continues US baseball sponsorship

Yokohama Tire Corporation’s sponsorship of US Major League Baseball team the Los Angeles Angels extends to a full decade with the signing of a further agreement covering the 2018 to 2020 seasons. The new three-year agreement continues a partnership that began in 2011. Under the agreement, the Yokohama logo will be displayed at the Angels’ home stadium.

Bridgestone Turanza OE on Lexus UX

The Bridgestone Turanza EL450 run-flat tyre will be supplied as original equipment on the new Lexus UX crossover vehicle. The Lexus UX, which was unveiled during the 88th International Geneva Motor Show last month, will be fitted with the Turanza EL450 in size 225/50RF18 95V.

Bohnenkamp growing in range and reach

The Bohnenkamp name has been a familiar one to us for some years now, not least through its acquisition of the divested STARCO aftermarket business in 2016, and when we visited the wholesaler’s headquarters for the first time recently we were welcomed by a company that is still growing: Vast two-storey warehouses are currently being erected alongside the existing warehousing complex, and when we met with Gregor Rüth, chief executive officer of the Bohnenkamp Group, we did so in an administrative building so new it was still receiving the finishing touches.

KDB dismissive of new offers on Kumho Tire

The clock is ticking, the labour union representing Kumho Tire’s workers still opposes the planned Qingdao Doublestar Tire acquisition, and creditor the Korea Development Bank (KDB) doesn’t think much of the alternative bid proposals announced this week. Time to find an alternative to liquidation is running out.

New Magna AG24 flotation tyre

Magna Tyres Group has introduced a new flotation tyre for agricultural trucks and trailers, the AG24. Produced in the popular size 24R20.5 and based upon the Obo Transport HD on/off road agricultural tyre, Magna Tyres calls its new product “the ultimate all-rounder for agri trucks and trailers.”

BSB: Pirelli introduces new front slick

After a dramatic final round in 2017 saw a three-way battle and Shane Byrne claim his sixth British Superbike Championship title, this season’s competition is getting under way at Donington Park over the Easter weekend. Pirelli will be there too, supplying the massive Superbike and support class field for an eleventh consecutive season.
