It isn’t just retreaders who have suffered at the hands of cheap tyres imported from the Far East. In a statement issued today, Michelin confirms that its plant in Dundee “continues to face extremely challenging trading conditions, primarily due to the influx of cheap tyres from Asia and falling demand for premium tyres in smaller dimensions.”
Visitors to the Delphi Technologies stand (hall 4.0, stand C12) at Automechanika Frankfurt this week will be the first to see its newly designed aftermarket packaging. Featuring a new logo in a wallpaper print as well as a retail box based on the current design, the upgraded packaging is part of an extensive rebranding exercise which will see the company transition from its red oval logo to a single, common identity for both OE and aftermarket businesses. An improved layout and higher quality materials will also provide more robust packaging without increasing materials, weight or package size.
According to a statement issued on 7 September, Pirelli has disposed of its car tyre factory in Guacara, Venezuela and all other activities within the country. As Pirelli’s Venezuelan subsidiary was deconsolidated as far back as 31 December 2015, the tyre maker says the operation’s divestment “has no financial effects on the group.”
A further development of Continental’s ContiConnect digital tyre monitoring platform will be showcased at the upcoming IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Germany. The evolution that Continental will show is said to be a “new solution that can be integrated into existing systems,” specifically a solution that will give these systems a digital tyre monitoring capability. Continental says it will announce further details at a press conference on 19 September.
As of 5 September, Pascal Couasnon has succeeded Alexandre Taisne as director of its Mobility Experience business line, a role he will carry out in addition to his supervision of the Motorsport business line (Competition). Matthieu Bonardel, formerly director of the Michelin group’s Connected Tires department, is Michelin’s new Motorsport director. He will act in this capacity under the supervision of Couasnon.
Schrader Performance Sensors has announced the launch of two new heavy-duty OE replacement sensors. The new valve-mounted sensors are already available for sale with the following part numbers: #3700 for Daimler trucks and #3702 for DAF trucks.

It’s official: Hankook Tire has submitted a tender for Formula 1 tyre supply between 2020 and 2023. Falken Tyre Europe says 1 September 2018 will go down in the annals of Falken Motorsports after it celebrated a double win at the Nürburgring – the first in its almost 20 years of VLN participation. Under a new partnership, Hankook Tire has become a sponsor to Association Sportive de Monaco, runner-up in France’s top football league last season. During last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, Jead Todt disclosed that a second tyre maker has expressed interest in becoming exclusive Formula 1 tyre supplier for the 2020 to 2023 seasons. He didn’t reveal the company’s name – he claimed not to have the information at hand – however we confirmed it wasn’t Michelin.
